There was a terrible family conflict, in the late 1700s, which continued until the civil war, when the plantation was burned and the family scattered. The details are sketchy, but it has been said that Edward died from Apoplexy, upon hearing of the Death of George Washington. The subsequent relocation of much of the Family to was then, frontier land, may have had its roots in this incident. They were very different men, for brothers, but John was the elder, and as such, the scion of the family. It must have been a disaster for them all, when he fell into disgrace and attempted suicide.
There were many of the family in the Confederate army, some of whom left TN and went to Texas. It's worthwhile to remember that Going to Tennessee, and later Texas, was, in effect, vanishing, without a trace. One family member, in Texas, fought in the Mexican war and was a leader in his community. When he died, there was no mention of his having been in the Confederate Army, even though records of it exist.
