What exactly is a nephew-in-law and a niece-in-law? [closed]

I have just come across a census entry with 2 children, with the same surname (probably brother and sister), described as being the nephew in law and the niece in law to the head of the house. The head also has one sister in law and his father in law also in the house but the neice and nephew are not called Grandson or granddaughter.

How would the niece in law and the nephew in law be related to the head of the household? Below is the link...

Thank you.

As Lynda says, Ruth, Elizabeth and Jane are all sisters. Here are the relevant records to show the relationships:

Ruth Fallowfield's marriage to George Dent:

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLD4-J4K : 10 February 2018), George Dent and Ruth Fallowfield, 28 May 1865; citing Morland,Westmorland,England, reference , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 0962101 IT 4, 97401, 97402, 97403.

Ruth Fallowfield's baptism:

"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NR9K-2HL : 11 February 2018, Ruth Fallowfield, 16 Jan 1831); citing , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 97,401, 97,402, 97,403.

Baptism of Elizabeth Fallowfield, Ruth's sister:

"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NR9K-VW5 : 11 February 2018, Elizabeth Fallowfield, 12 Jul 1829); citing , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 97,401, 97,402, 97,403.

Elizabeth's marriage to William Kilner:

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLD4-B2P : 10 February 2018), William Kilner and Elizabeth Fallowfield, 12 May 1855; citing Morland,Westmorland,England, reference , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 0962101 IT 4, 97401, 97402, 97403.

Just to confirm that Thomas and his wife Jane are the parents of Ruth, Elizabeth and the "sister-in-law" Jane that appears in the 1871 census, here is that Jane's baptism too:

"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NR9K-H22 : 11 February 2018, Jane Fallowfield, 10 Aug 1834); citing , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 97,401, 97,402, 97,403.

Wife's niece or nephew, so sister in law's children I would guess.

Looking at other censuses for these folks, it appears that Barbara and William are the grandchildren of Thomas, and children of his deceased daughter, a sister of Ruth and Jane.  They are the children of a sister-in-law, so niece and nephew in-law.  The 1861 Newby census lists Ruth as the sister-in-law of William Kilmer, the children’s father.

Barbara Ann Kilner is the daughter of William Kilner and Elizabeth. William Kilner married Elizabeth Fallowfield in Westmorland in 1855. George Dent married Ruth Fallowfield in Westmorland in 1865. My guess is that the enumerator got a bit carried away with the in-law bit and these children are niece and nephew of George and Ruth with Ruth and Elizabeth being sisters. You would need to check that last relationship though.

The Dictionary says,Daughter in Law of someones Brother or sister.

I am sure it looks confusing in your info.Figuring out who is the sister. The one age 34 is the most likely.
