My mother and father emigrated, separately, to the US around 1910 from Hungary. My mother's ancestors reside primarily in Hungary. My father's ancestors originally came from Germany, but in the 1700's, were part of the Donauschwaben migration to the Banat region (Hatzfeld, now Jimbolia) of what is now Romania (then it was part of Hungary). In coming to America, different parts of the Pape family came to Cincinnati, Michigan and Montreal. I have traced the Pape family back to an Adolph Pape, born in 1760, I think in Germany, but lived, married and died in Hatzfeld. I hope to find out more about the roots of my Pape family in Germany.

Banater Schwaben came from a variety of regions in mostly Southern Germany (Franken, Bayern, Österreich, Elsass, Lothringen, Luxemburg, Baden, Rheinpfalz). The name "Schwaben" is probably the result of the majority of emigrants starting their journey in Ulm. Apparently they were registered there by the Habsburg authorities organizing this emigration. I am not aware of any availability of these registrations anywhere, or if they even still exist in any archives, but in the absence of more information where your family came from that would be pretty much the only way of finding it out.

I don't know if you have contacted some of the Donauschwaben organizations but here are some web addresses:
