Ain't Nothing Like Missouri Home Fried Chicken

Can't remember if I shared this c1910 photo of my Great Grandfather and his family having some 'take out' chicken on a Sunday afternoon.  In the photo we have my 3rd Great Grandmother, Sarah Jane Stevens (1840-1926).  Others are my great grandmother Luella Ricord, and my great uncles.  I guess this is why I luv chicken so much!

I wanted to share this family photo of Joseph Lee with the community. Location: St. Clair, Missouri. Date: c1910.

My grandfather had a hat just like the gentleman on the left, and from the same time period. Must have been popular. He was in Texas at the time. All the boys in this picture seem to rather pleased! Not so the ladies.

I eat fried chicken in jeans so I have a place to wipe my hands. Yes, I am that uncouth, a true Southern country boy. (I just don’t do it when my wife is looking! Good behavior often comes from fear of the repercussions!!)

The 'gentleman' on the left with the hat is my grandpa Orie!  He owned orange and black watermelon trucks that delivered all of the watermelons to all of the Alpha Beta stores in Los Angeles in the 50s and 60s.  He started selling watermelons to a little store in L.A. that became Alpha Beta.  His first truck was a Model T...he carried so many melons on his truck that in order to get them back from the watermelon fields in the desert he had to back up the San Gabriel mountains in reverse to get over the hills! Believe or not!  My memories of this southern California 'Watermelon King', Orie Finiae Lee are found here https://www.inthechickencoop.us/trees/lee#orieleebio/

The little boy in the middle is Uncle Frank Lee, he owned a watermelon company too, tho smaller, and his main customer was the Piggly Wiggly chain in L.A. et al.  Although his company was smaller, he had the best looking trucks, all of them red and black...Diamond T's and Mac and Reo, all would be prized antiques today!

Thanks for your comment!

Ah, beautiful St. Clair, Franklin County. My wife's father and his family were there for many years. Her great grandfather William Kitchell was a doctor in town for many years and her great uncle Sherwood Kitchell ran a funeral home for many years.

Oh wow, a family picnic.  Away from duties and a bit of free time with family.  Is this where the saying "finger lickin' good" comes from 'cause those guys will NOT wipe their fingers on their pants... the ladies are there.  Thank you for sharing this fun time with family photo.

Hey Nicole, wouldn't the Colonel from an adjacent state have something to say about that "finger lickin' good" attribution?
Ah - but maybe that guy from the adjacent state took that attribution from a scene just like this one and claimed it as his own.  Could this be one of those "which came first, the chicken or the egg"?
Could be!

I Like The "Mo" collective prosperity, posterity and lad's pointed finger declaring, number one, heaven bound, fried chicken blessed, a moment painted in timeless light, taking a bucket and pie for the "Shoe Me" Golden Gate with Finger Licking Mighty Mighty Fine Delight. !

I can taste the joy, opine the delicious aroma and the uplifting-ambrosial expectation that crispy goodness is eternal.

C'est Bon Magnifique Family Treasure !   Th'xs Scott Lee

I can't think of anything better than family having a meal together, unless they are having chicken together. My favorite all time good. And you have an excellent picture.

Thank yo for sharing with your WikiTree family.

My family is from the county next door.  Growing up, we had fried chicken every Friday night!  I miss those meals.
