Is there a list of what symbols do what?

Question

I just want to post something like the following under Biography...

Name.                       Age

Andrew Smith.          49

Susie Smith.             49

Andrew Smith           26

John Smith               20

...but when I save it everthing comes out in a paragraph instead of on separate lines as shown. How do I insert a carriage return or whatever is needed and how would I make thw Name and Age appear in bold print.

My original question is asking where I would go to find a list of what symbols do what.

You are looking for wiki coding. Most, except for the most simple is discouraged on profiles because few people really know how to use it and I think we are trying to keep things simple. You can get more fancy on your own profile or on a free space. It looks like you want to make a list after a source citation. To cause the text to line up not in paragraph form, there are about four very simple ways to do it.

1.  You can skip two lines instead of one. This wastes space, so it really is better for defining paragraphs.

2. You can create a bulleted list.  If you want one with a dot in front of each line with an indent, use an asterisk *

3. To indent, but have each line numbered, use a hash mark #

4.  To just indent, use a colon :  I usually use two colons to indent a little more. It then lines up nicely with the source citation.

You won't be able to line up the ages like this, but you can use a comma or hyphen to separate it from the name. If you need help with a table, I know how to do that also. But, like I said, they are discouraged for use on profiles.

Start your table with "{|"

To start a new row add "|-" at the beginning of a line of text.

To separate cells on a single line use "||".

End your table with "|}"

I dont use tables - too complicated.

I just use the <br /> tag at the end of each line and that creates a new line for each person. BUT everything still has to stay in one paragraph in the edit mode.

So what you did above would look like this in edit mode

Name.              Age <br /> Andrew Smith.          49 <br /> Susie Smith.             49 <br /> Andrew Smith           26 <br /> John Smith               20 <br />

Of course the cell padding code that E Martin gave you looks good as well. I might just copy that one and start using that!!
