Hear Ye!! Hear Ye!!

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help.

Or if you just want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up.

Or if you even want to JOIN the Notables project and get a badge

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and noone can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they should be DEAD!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2018

Above is a list of those who have passed already this year.

Have fun!!

OK Link to this thread from the Notables page has been updated for November. I will have to remember to update that link every month!!

I am a newbie to the Notables Project. I just took a quick look at the list of notables who need profiles. On the list is entertainer Danny Thomas, who  I would like to add a profile for, and work at researching and adding profiles for his paternal and maternal family lines, if possible. Do I first need approval to do so from group manager ?
Sandie, if you're interested, go for it. You don't need anyone's permission. The only thing to watch out for is that there isn't already a profile for him, because we don't want duplicates.
Got another rock star connected tonight -- Leon Wilkeson of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Should go live when the database updates.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wilkeson-27

I am joining the notables project and requesting a badge.  Have added tag, notable stickers and Wiki source to McNaughton-994 and McNaughton-997 Thanks!

I'm not asking to join your project, but I recently adopted a notable who isn't listed as such: Thomas Blackburn.  I've been working on his profile and, while it's not as "pretty" as some, I've actually put information there - with sources - to counter what had been there (profile hadn't been touched since 2013, no sources, "witnessed" by the uploader blah blah).

His son Sir Charles Bickerton Blackburn KCMG OBE is also a notable, as is his (Thomas) other son Arthur Seaforth Blackburn VC CMG CBE.

I have not found a profile (I am intending to create it, unless it is here already, or someone else would like to) for a grandson of Thomas: Emeritus Professor Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Ruthven Bickerton Blackburn AC.  Another  grandson Sir Richard Arthur Blackburn, OBE, should also be a notable (I haven't looked for him yet), as would be great-granddaughter Elizabeth Helen Blackburn (still living).

These are not my direct relatives, but are connected by marriage (Sir Charles Bickerton Blackburn's wife, Lady Vera, is my 2nd cousin twice removed), yet I still feel a sense of pride in what they have done in their lives.  (I believe there is a term for that: "reflected glory".)

They all have pages on Wikipedia (unlike my own direct line, other than gr-gr-granddad whose HOUSE has a wiki page), as well as other pages (such as the University of Sydney School of Medicine (Charles)) so should qualify.

Welcome to the Notables Team, Nancy!
Melanie, you stated so well what many of us love about Notables. I generally start off with one knowing just about their famous life, and by the time I'm done I find that they are just as human as the rest of us, with real life experiences that make them much more real than when I started. I enjoy the aspect of their famous lives and accomplishments, but more than that, I can feel more compassion for many of them who have gone through challenges and tragedies in their lives or in their families that perhaps made them what they were.

Except, for me, it was the reverse.  In every case, so far, where I have family members (by blood or by marriage, or marriage association (A. Jefferis Turner is that)), I did not know until I went hunting for the sources to back up the handwritten family notes that any of these people could be considered "notable".  I always knew about the Judge in the family, but from the way my mother always referred to him as "somewhere up the tree", I didn't realise he was an important man of his times.  But he's not qualified to be a wikitree "notable" because he doesn't have a Wikipedia page (his HOUSE does, though).  His son, also doesn't have a Wikipedia page, but he was definitely "notable" in his time.  Perhaps not to the point of his best friend A. Jefferis Turner, but he was well thought of by his peers and made it into the Who's Who in Australia (as did his father the Judge).

Each and every one of these people on the collateral side have come as an eye-opening, jaw-dropping amazement.  "I'm related to HIM?!"

So, essentially, I knew their human, fallible, side long before I discovered their fame.

I'm especially blown away by the heroism of some of them.  One who will never be "notable" is my grand-Uncle George who died of smallpox after being on Gallipoli Peninsula 1915.  Both his surviving brothers signed up as a result of his being on Gallipoli.  That's heroism of the non "notable" kind.  As is the brother of my Mother's aunt's husband.  He lost TWO brothers, one on Gallipoli Peninsula (26 April 1915) and one who was sent to Egypt for a sore throat that somehow became the meningitis that killed him less than 24 hours after diagnosis in early 1916.  (He'd (the brother) been on Gallipoli Peninsula, too, and was Wounded in Action, recovered from the shrapnel wounds, was sent back to his unit, then sent on the hospital ship to Egypt.)  DESPITE those two losses, my Grand-Uncle's brother signed up in 1916, leaving a pregnant wife and a daughter.*  THAT's heroism and is notable, but not by wikitree standards.

THESE are who blow me away.  I knew of their everyday lives first.  I have honoured their sacrifices ever since I knew of them, back 40-plus years ago.  I brought my children up to also honour the sacrifices made by ALL those who served.  I get a thrill when I see so many here making sure that others like my non-"notables" get recognition, even if it's just from a "sticker" on their profile.  :)

* He made it home.  Wounded in Action in France, he was repatriated to Australia and lived to father more children than just the two daughters he had.

I have a notable I would like to add to the Notables List, American Painters - Hinrichs-479 known as Eric Sloane, but I am not sure how to do this, maybe someone here could? I have some basic information on the profile.
Cindy, you can repost to the January Notables thread and Im sure someone will help you.

* People without WikiTree profiles.

Greg, Olive (Harrisson) Edmundson now has a profile: Harrisson-58. I'll work on connecting her.

I'll do things a bit differently this month.  Rather than focus on connecting notables, I'll spend some time building out their biographies instead.  My focus will begin with theosophist Henry Steel Olcott.  On the French Roots side, I also plan to work on explorer and author Alexandra David-Néel.

Help!  I've spent hours trying to connect Lynn Joseph Frazier to the tree, but he is still unconnected!  I am ready to throw in the towel and ask for help -- I'm tired of seeing his  name on my Suggestions list!  Can anybody help?

While this would be the first time I would be working on a connecting a notable I’m willing to help. I’m thinking a good place to start might actually be to add his siblings. We might be able then to get hits off spouses of theirs.
Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for picking up the torch!
I might have a connection tonight - we'll see if everything lines up. I might have slipped the changes in too late for the links to update tonight, in which case, it will connect tomorrow night.
Thanks, Scott. Amanda has been working on connecting him through his mother. First she had discovered that her maiden name was actually Hoar, which last name was apparently changed by the entire family.  She discovered all sorts of interesting info. Congrats to both of you for getting him connected!! He was a tough one!!

Hi! I've been following this tag for awhile and I was doing research on William Moulton Marston. I noticed his profile was unconnected and figured I would start working on it. I've adopted the profile and added his father from census and marriage records so far. I plan on adding more of his immediate family and more sources soon if that's ok. Thanks, Jon

I connected this “notable” (has wikipedia page).  I was actually trying to connect somebody else. The connection will show tomorrow. Now, I will try to connect the person I intended to connect.

Hey, gang, they're planning to have a "Scan-A-Thon" in January, encouraging people to scan and put up photos for their family members. It seems to me that adding photos for notables should count, and there are a ton of notables who don't have any photos on their profiles.

We talked before about the possibility of putting together a Notables Project team for other Thons, so maybe this is the time to get our act together? We could improve a lot of notable profiles, and hopefully have some fun at the same time.

Whaddya think? Do we want to do this? And if so, what should we call ourselves?

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (669k points)
yeah, that sounds like a plan. Is there a list to see who all has a notable badge and has e.g. no profile pic? I'd be in that team...

Yes, on the Notables List, in the Notable Profiles in Need of Improvement (Silver) section, there are a number of profiles with a "No" instead of a "Yes" in the "Image?" column. Those would all be candidates.

Also, probably a large number of profiles in the Notable Profiles in Need of Notables Project markers (Bronze) section are missing images (although they have other fixes that they need before they can be moved to the Silver section and be marked as to whether they have images or not).

Possible Team Names:

  1. Notable Notaries
  2. Famously Photogenic
  3. Famously Fotogenic
  4. Phamously Photogenic
  5. Team Notables
  6. Paparazzi
  7. Genaparazzi
  8. Geneaparazzi
  9. PaparaTree
  10. Random Fan Club
  11. [Insert Notable Person's Name Here] Fan Club (as in, that would be the name of the team, with the brackets and "inset name here" part)
  12. Notable Hunters
  13. Celebrity Hunters
  14. National Organisation To Add Biographies and Lots of Excellent Sources (NOTABLES)
  15. Fraternal Association to Memorialise Outstanding or Unusual Subjects (FAMOUS)
  16. Wikiparazzi
  17. Celebrity Stalkers
  18. WikiTree Bureau of Investigation
  19. Celebrity Intelligence Agency
  20. Celebrity/Notables Network (CNN)
This list isn't in any kind of order, just as I think of ideas. Feel free to add your own. The more the merrier! This is the brainstorming stage. We can narrow the list down later, and then go with the one that most people like. I am going for "fun" here, but I'm open to going with a more serious name like "Team Notables" if that's what most people want.

Update: Eowyn said that the Scan-A-Thon would be limited to scanning photos in people's possession, rather than copying photos from Wikimedia Commons or elsewhere, so that kind of removes a Notables Team from contention, but we can still think about taking part in the next Thon that rolls around.

Hi, I'm currently integrating the Delaware Governors, assembly presidents, and other state founders into the Delaware Project and I see that many (most) of them are notables so I'd like to join in order to liaise between the two projects.

Got motivated by watching old re-runs of Batman from the 1960's - found Alan Napier already out there, but there was an interesting thread that said he was related through marriage to Charles Dickens. Went out and connected the line so we can now trace him back through the great play writer himself.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Napier-Clavering-1

So I went on from Alfred to Commissioner Gordon. Neil Hamilton. He was a tough one to connect, but I gave him an initial profile, and after a lot of research and dead-end ancestors, I found one that connected him to the tree. He should be connected tonight.

I also noticed that Summer got to this one before me - nice job, Summer!

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McGregor-2891

And sad to hear that she passed. She was good at portraying a strong, stubborn and sometimes mean woman on Little House on the Prairie.
I've also connected Aunt Harriet from the 1960s Batman TV Show:

Another rock star has been connected to the Tree -- Paul Kossoff of Free! (if you want to hear possibly the greatest guitar solo ever recorded, listen to "Moonshine" off Free!'s 1971 live album).

I knew I remembered this band! It seems to me that the radio played "All Right Now" so many times it had to be a #1 hit - and after checking Wiki it was in some places at least. Another of the somewhat forgotten bands from the 1970's. Great work, Jessica!
"All Right Now" was their biggest hit, but weirdly enough not very much like their other songs. Maybe I'll try to connect bassist Andy Fraser next. He died back in 2015.

Every once in a while, somebody posts a message to G2G asking something along the lines of "Why isn't there a WikiTree profile for [insert famous person's name here]?"

Very often, they've been asking about some living celebrity (athlete, musician, actor, etc.), possibly because they're a fan. So in cases like that, we should be telling them:

  • there may actually be a profile for that person already, but you can't see it, because the profiles of living notables are marked as unlisted unless they manage their own profile and set the privacy level lower, and
  • we're not making new profiles for living notables, because nobody could see them.

But sometimes, people ask about notables of the past who are deceased, and therefore could have profiles on WikiTree, but don't. (Or at least, not yet.)

Up to now, those people have been included on the Notables List page, but there have been a couple of problems with that:

  1. The WikiTree server is now complaining that the Notables List page is too large (actually, it's more than three times larger than the recommended file size for a page), and therefore might not load correctly on all browsers.
  2. There was so much content on the Notables List page that some people might have trouble even navigating it, and other people might get frustrated, because all they want to do is request a profile for a notable, and they don't care about the rest of the stuff on that page.

Therefore, I have taken the "People in Need of a WikiTree Profile" section out of the Notables List page, and spun it out into a separate page called Notable People in Need of a WikiTree Profile and put in reciprocal links between that page and the Notables List. So now, when that kind of question comes up, we can steer people to that page.

It needs some more work. It should really have instructions on how to edit that page to add somebody to the list of profiles to create, and also instructions on how to create, source, and add categories (and either the Notables Template or the Notables Sticker) to a category, and how to add the Notables Project as Profile Manager, but at least it's a start.

It's always fun to learn about notables in our global family tree :)

Have been helping to link notables to this project, and writing biographies for them, it's always fun to learn about history while doing so.

Would love to be officially part of the project!

I saw. It's not like I'm flashing that many badges around :P. Pretty easy to notice. Thanks Scott!

Knowing that the Notables category is high-level, I am still in the process of moving the profiles in this category to "the narrowest category possible."  That is, based on the country and/or region of a Notable subject.  Also, I am downgrading the Notables template to the Notables Sticker template within profiles of deceased Notables.
by Nicolas LaPointe G2G6 (10.0k points)
Thank you for doing that, Nicolas. I noticed that you had (appropriately) "downgraded" a number of profiles that I manage.

I also appreciate that you're putting in specific categories to clear people out of the Notables Category into appropriate sub-categories.

I have added another category to help clear out the Notables category: [[Category:Living Notables]]

I like to use the obituaries in papers like The Washington Post for sources, so I'll try James H. Billington, 13th Librarian of Congress.

by Karen Lowe G2G6 Pilot (189k points)

Okay, James Billington was easy. Let's try Barry Rand, African-American business executive. Hmm, he isn't on Wikipedia so I might have to add him there as well. I'll wait to add Notables sticker until I see if the Wikipedia article is approved.

Hi,

I have adopted John Byron, father of the poet, and I have found his Baptism and Marriage on FindMyPast. They are different to the dates already on the profile. Who do I discuss this with ?   Byron-128

David.
by David Urquhart G2G6 Pilot (166k points)
Hi David - you can post your findings here, but the tags are limited to the Notables who are watching the Notables tag. I'd recommend starting a separate G2G and tag it with Notables and Byron and asking the question and include all the details so that people can respond.

If you don't get any responses, you might capture the information that's on the profile and note that "some researchers have claimed that the baptism occurred on xxxxx date at xxxxx place, but sources indicate that the actual date and place are xxxxx." or something like that. I'd also keep in mind that the birth date and baptism date doesn't always line up, so depending on who listed what information in what field, the dates might look a little odd.
Thank you Scott.

Re the following question for which I have added some extra children...

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/723397/notable-sticker-for-frank-bunker-gilbreth-sr

I think that Frank Sr, his wife Lilian and the 2 children who wrote the books, Frank Junior and Ernestine, are all Notable - they all have wikipedia pages.

Can you add the Notables project if any of them become orphaned, please?

I must find these books and read them....

I certainly liked the movies - both versions
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
I think I picked up one of them for Notables to manage - the rest still had managers when I checked.
