Where Did Mary E. (Carrier) Tifft Go, Who Did She Marry and When Did She Die?

+2 votes
Mary E. Carrier, b. ca. 1822 in New York, daughter of John M. Carrier and Eunice Smith married Horatio Tifft about 1842. They had at least 4 children. They are together on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Supposedly, John married again in 1864, and in 1870, he is shown on the census with a different wife, Ann.

When Mary's father John M. Carrier made his Will in 1872, he made a bequest to daughter "Mary E. Carrier, Tifft or Stikes or whatever name she goes by."  When his Will was probated in 1875, a notice was published, naming a Mary E. Avery of South Adams, Massachusetts, as one of the heirs.

There is a Mary E. Avery living in Adams, Berkshire, Massachusetts, with a husband Horace Avery, in 1880, (she is shown as 50 years old so born about 1830.)

I can find no record of a marriage of Mary Carrier Tifft, a divorce record from Tifft, a marriage record to a Stikes, a marriage to an Avery, or a death record.  What happened to Mary?

I saw your post and I thought I could help, but when I was reading it, I wasn't sure exactly what you were needing so I thought I would work the sure thing and  start with Her father John M Carrier. So I started looking at google.com and did find a John  M Carrier that did marry a Eunice Smith so I was sure this was the one, but it didn't say anything about him having a daughter named Mary E. so I went to Family Search which really didn't give me much to go on.  So I went to family search in genealogies and did not find much but I then went to Find a grave and found this:

John Marzevan Carrier b. 1796 died 18 Oct 1825  or died in 1875.  It has been reported that he died in 1825, and 1875.  John married Eunice Smith abt 1816 at age 20. They had 8 children.  John died in Rensselaer Co. New York.    Wife Eunice Smith Carrier b. 10 Sept 1800 died 5 July 1888 age 87 Hillside Cemetery,. Rensselaer Co, N.Y.  Find a grave # is 14783266.

Emily Elvira Carrier Enos - daughter of John M & Eunice Smith Carrier b. 13 July 1824 Rensselaer Co, N.Y.  Died 15 Dec 1861 age 37 Rensselaer Co. N. Y.   Hillside Cemetery, Rensselaer Co, New York. James C. Enos b. 10 July 1822 Rensselaer Co.. New York Hillside Cemetery, Rensselaer Co. New York   Find a grave 44386338  Died 29 March 1908   age 85.    Her children:  Emma E. Enos Weatherby b. 1848 - 1937 ;   &    Lucy Enos Kittredge   I forgot to write down her born date and death date but it is on Her parents page also.    I did not see a Mary E. Carrier  as a daughter to John and Eunice Smith Carrier but this was the closest to them that had about the right birth. And I am not sure of the mix-up of the name came about but I am not surprised. But let me know if this is Mary E that you need because she is the daughter of John M and Eunice Smith Carrier.

Parents of John M Carrier are Amaziah Carrier b. 1754 - died 1832 He was born in New London Connecticut and he is the son of Amos Carrier and Phebe Kneeland Carrier. Thanks, Nancy.  Some of what you have isn't on profiles, so it will help.

What I'm trying to find out is what happened to Mary E. (Carrier) Tifft after 1864:

  • Is there a document showing that Mary and Horatio Tifft separated or divorced?
  • Can we find a marriage document for Mary and a man named Stikes? (Her father called her "Mary Tifft, Stikes, or whatever name she goes by.")
  • Is the Mary Avery living in Adams, Massachusetts, wife of Horace Avery, the same person as Mary E. Carrier? (The probate document shows an heir named Mary E. Avery.) If so, can we find a marriage document?
  • Where and when did Mary E. (Carrier) Tifft (Stikes?) Avery? die?
