Starting with ancesters first

I have a family tree showing most decendents of Fred Finch & Tryphana Dye who Married in 1700's in Warwickshire uk.  Can I start my Tree at that level and work down to today?

Finch-Dye   Dye-Staley Staley-Dryland  Staley- Mumford   Staley-Irions

Staley became Steeley. Steeley-Morgan.

Personally, I started with myself and immediate family so that there is an easy linking method and constant connection and work one family group at a time. Otherwise, your profile will sit by itself until you finally connect. Also as you create, you will have to check for existing profiles to avoid duplicates.

At the moment you are still a guest and cannot create any profiles until you sign the Honor Code and become a Volunteer.  Please make sure you read through the intro and help pages to get an understanding of profile creation, privacy settings and the need for viable sources in your profiles. Welcome to WikiTree!  :-)

I agree with Lauren, its easier to start from the bottom, and go up rung by rung (parents, then 4 grandparents, then 8 great grandparents, etc).  It also means when you do link up to the tree (aka already existing profiles), there will be fewer people to input.

While I agree that starting with yourself then parents etc is usually the best way to go there is nothing to prevent you starting with other profiles, any well sourced profile helps wikitree and will eventually join up with other research.

The only thing to watch for with older profiles is they may already be on wikitree so you need to be extra carefull when checking for matches.

As Lauren pointed out you cannot create any profiles, or edit any other than your own while still a guest, so you will need to read the instructions on your profile page, volunteer by making a comment about how you are going to help then a greeter will confirm your membership.
