My grandmother, Irma Fuld Adler, My mother, Ellen Adler Schwartz Pollack and Uncle Irwin Adler entered the U.S. by ship at the end of October or beginning of November, 1939. How can I obtain ship's records of them? They entered the country through France. What part would be closest to Germany?

Hello Debbie.

Your mother, your grandmother and your uncle sailed from Le Havre, France on 1938 according to the following:

  • 1940 US Census of your grandparents family:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89MB-9DHM

(The family is listed in lines 27 to 30)

Your grandmother Irma was 35, your uncle Irwin/Erwin was 10 and your mother Ellen was 8. The three of them were living in Frankfurt, Germany on 1935.

  • Passenger list, S. S. Washington sailing from Le Havre, France on 30 Sep 1938:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G5N8-L7C

(Lines 2, 3 and 4)

Your grandmother Irma was 33, your uncle Irwin/Erwin was 8 and your mother Ellen was 6. "Last permanent residence" for the three of them: Frankfurt, Germany.

Thank you for your help. I'd love to see the exact passenger list if that's possible. What line was the ship from?
I hope the following Wikipedia article may be of help:

See the Immigration Records and Passenger Lists category for a number of sources on finding people on passenger lists. If you're interested in tracking the ship itself, there is also A guide to categories for emigrant-immigrant ships.

The thing was that they were on a cruise ship, and did not get off at Ellis Island.
