Can anyone please help. I'm looking to find all members of the both families. I know Martin Phelan was born in 1940 & died 17 Jul 2010. He a brother Michael & sisters. Sarah, Phil, Maureen & Liz (I don't know any dates ect). Their mum was Elizabeth O'Rourke (daughter of Michael O'Rourke). The O'Rourkes lived at 40 Stanaway Road before settling at 68 Sundrive Road Dublin

Anthony, in line with prior comments on one or more of your other abundant posts in the post week or so, some of these individuals may be living and I do not believe it is appropriate to seek details on them on this forum. Your repeated queries seem to point towards a desire to identify living family members rather than trace backwards.

Regarding Martin, a simple google search gives an entry on RIP.ie, an Irish Times entry and information from his show band career.

In relation to his siblings, the only records you would find for people of this generation to my knowledge would be indexed BMD records that cover the period to 1958. These are only available on Ancestry (unless someone else knows different) but would only have the registration location and mother's maiden name along with the year and quarter. There is obviously the possibility of multiple O'Rourkes being born to Phelan mothers with those forenames and if you do not have dates you might come up with a lot of 'hits' to follow up on.

There are a lot of free resources that will cover the period until 100 years  ago for births, 75 years for marriages and 50 years for deaths and Jean has referred to some of these in her answer already.

For people that have passed away recently (i.e. in the past ten years or so), sites like RIP.ie would have death notices.
Jason, Well said
Ok thanks sorry for the continuous questions i'm still pretty new to researching my family history
Anthony, Good luck with your research. I gave up researching The Phelan Clan some time ago. Unlike many of the old Irish, Phelan (O'Faolain) disappeared from history shortly after the Norman invasion. The name is centred in two main areas, Co Laois and the Decies(Deise) Co Waterford, S Kilkenny and S Tipperary. They were Princes of the Decies. Some years ago an American claimed to be Chief but his claim failed.
Hi Brian thanks for your reply but you see in order to find the names of my ancestors i need to find my great aunt ELIZABETH O'ROURKE who married THOMAS PHELAN between 1930 & 1936

I have not answered your exact question. Instead I have found the marriage date of your grandparents Cornelius Carroll and Katherine Redmond by going to https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/

I am sure you will then be able to go back at least one generation, if not two

Once you are back a generation have a look at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ and you can check the 1901 and 1911 census.

And as it looks as though your ancestors were Roman Catholic you can spend hours finding more family at the RC Irish Registers https://registers.nli.ie/

I did not say that this would be easy but it is doable. And very satisfying.

Anthony,

You may have noticed that, not for the first time, someone has flagged your request for assistance. I assume this means that person is annoyed at the frequency of these repeated posts. May I suggest you take the time to learn to do the necessary research. FamilySearch has an excellent tutorial located HERE. In much the same way that home grown vegetables always seem to taste better than store-bought ones, you will find that discovering your family through your own efforts brings a great deal of satisfaction.

That being said, remember there are many here who are happy to help, but will balk at being expected to do all the work. Genealogy is a process, often a slow one, and not a matter of simply waking up one day to find a complete family history prepared by someone else. If genealogy was fast and easy very few of us would bother with it. Keep plugging away. smiley
