I have Military documents that indicate this Newberry Turner's middle initial is Y., he was born in Gwinnett Co. GA in 1831,   still looking for proof of what the Y stands for. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If he is American, the Y probably stands for just that - Y.wink

True, Ros. It seems that at that time period, lots of children were getting a middle initial instead of a name. I’ve got several of these in my families.

Thanks Ros Haywood and Pip Sheppard.

Really?  He was born in Georgia, USA. I have racked my brain trying to find another Y name in the family. Needless to say one has not been found.  Was hoping that the Y name might give me a lead to the mother's  parents. Thanks Again!

How about Harry S Truman?
Yancy?  Or maybe it wasn't a given name at all, but a maiden name from earlier in the family used as a middle name.
all are certainly possibilities.
