My great grand aunt, Bridget E Collins (Colleran) Gallaher Geraty, b. 1842 in County Sligo married twice.  She had about 13 children with Edward F Gallaher who operated a Dry Goods store in Augusta, GA.  With all of the children he and Bridget had, you would think there was a lot of information available.  I have found one connection with a descendant who lives in Savannah, GA but surely there are others!

When Edward Gallaher died, Bridget married a man named Bernard "Barney" Geraty who was also born in County Sligo, Ireland.  He had been married once before as well.

Bridget died in the Bronx, NY at her daughter's residence.

Her sister was my great great grandmother, Mary Collins (Colleran) Meehan, who also resided in Augusta, GA and operated a grocery store.  She too had lots of children.

She came to the USA before 1850 and had to put her boys in an orphanage in GA while she worked as an indentured slave for a wealthy family.

Later, she got her boys out and most of them became printers, something they learned from the nuns who operated the orphanage.

Family lore is the two women went to Augusta, GA since a relative had obtained some land in a lottery.

Thanks for the response!

I do know one of the addresses is now a Japanese Restaurant in Augusta named Kawa...1135 Broad St.  This was for a Gallaher.

The other address I have is 422 and 426 2nd St, which is now the home of a music teacher who is trying to refurbish the place.  He contacted me through findagrave.com ---its was originally a grocery store owned by Mary Collins Meehan, my great grandmother.  The present owner said most of the place was painted green,  An indication she was irish?

My great grandfather also had a jewelry store on Broad St which was adjacent to a stationery store.  He got angry at a sign owned by the stationery shop overlapping his sign and got a ladder and cut the sign!

The name of the shop was Brunsterman(n)s.

I have been to Augusta several times and even found the intersection where my great grandfather got run down and killed by a drunk driver.  Millegdeville Road where there is a 3 or 4 road instersection.

I would like to view the Orphange in Savanah  where my great uncles lived (and one died) while their mother worked as an indentured servant for a doctor's family.  The boys learned a printing trade and worked for years for the Augusta Chronicle.

Thanks.  jean
