I wanted to share this family photo of the Marie Murphy name with the community. Location: unknown. Date: 1932 .

How do you record 'Location' as it is an Orient Line ship's manifest?

Am I right to assume that these two women are related? Mrs. B. Guest is described as a teacher, aged 48. Marie Simone Guest, aged 12, is described as scholar. They boarded in Burma.

Is it a mistake that Marie's name has the initial 'S' on the manifest? The address at 7 Beacon Terrace is correct.

My maternal family was from Mauritius. It was / is common practice for people to use the last name before their surname - and many female children were given the name Marie as their first given name. This was the case with my mother, her two sisters and her mother who were all born in Mauritius. Thus my mother was Marie Paule Andree  but was known as Andree (ditto style followed for all my female Mauritian relatives / friends) Here in France the custom is often to use Marie - hyphen - another name eg we have in our village Marie-Francoise, Marie-Claude, Marie-Ange etc. Marie is Mary in French ie the mother of Jesus. This usage is all outdated nowadays.

I am at the beginning of my search for my ancestors in Mauritius and finding it extremely difficult to get information. 3 out of 4 grandparents are from Mauritius and one strand is anglo so appears to be from the British Administration. The only line I have been successful in tracing back is mt grandmother who was British, born in Liverpool. The other 3 lines I only have information from late 19th century.

Thank you so much for your input.  This is all new to me.

You say "3 out of 4 grandparents are from Mauritius and one strand is anglo so appears to be from the British Administration. The only line I have been successful in tracing back is mt grandmother who was British, born in Liverpool. The other 3 lines I only have information from late 19th century." We may be able to help each other.

On board the SSNarkunda my mother is described as a British Citizen although she was a French speaker. I think her name was Guet, rather than Guest.

MyHeritage shows that I only have one DNA connection with Mauritius. I know where to rule out (Port Louis and Curepipe).

Could we share names perhaps?

Hi Christine - would love to collaborate. I am very new to this site so really have no idea how it works. Strangely my non Mauritian line (my paternal grandmother) was also from Liverpool and I have been really successful in tracing this back to 1700s in part. The Anglo names (as you say probably from British Admin) are Miller, Harris and Clune. The "French" names are Brunet, Ducasse, Jacquin and Bouvier, I know many Mauritians left Mauritius for South Africa in the early 20th century especially for Natal and the sugar cane farms in which they had expertise. A lot also went to Australia. My DNA matches have proved to be frustrating regarding Mauritian links with my highest matches that appear to be on this side, not responding or being willing to allow me to view trees despite me sharing names and my Ancestry tree being public. I am happy to share whatever information I have and would be really grateful if you could share information / sources of information etc as well.

Thanks

How good! Thank you.

I am not a good genealogist !!! However, I can muddle my way through. Other genealogists have helped me enormously.  We are all still learning.

You know that you can put names on a watch list? So I shall add Miller, Harris and Clune and also Brunet, Ducasse, Jacquin and Bouvier in the hope of finding a match somewhere along the line.

I did not know that many Mauritians left Mauritius for South Africa in the early 20th century. That might explain some Dutch-sounding names that I've come across.

You are not the only one who finds Mauritian genealogy to be difficult. I know others who find the complexities very difficult. And I also have had the experience of getting a very close match, only to have the other side block me.  It seems extremely unfair, even cruel, to do such things. This whole genealogy thing depends on each one playing their part - no man is an island!

I'm willing to share openly with you.

Best,

Christine

BTW where did you get the name 'Simone'? That is my mother's middle name.

Its this site I am struggling with - is this the only way of messaging / sharing info? I didn't know about the watch list! LOL!

The name Simone is not uncommon in France and among French speaking people. My mother was born in Mauritius (French was her first language)  and went to SA as a child - I have first hand experience of the many Mauritians in Natal!!! I may know some of your family names. If you need help with South African genealogy I am happy to help as its a different slant as one researches death records - as difficult as Mauritius in a different way. Have you tried the records on AMA for Mauritian info?

I have had lots of lovely chatty messages through my DNA matches but unfortunately not related to my brick walls which is so frustrating. I have a second cousin sharing a lot of DNA  not responded, and also someone with good shared DNA and the name Clune also not responsive despite logging on every day to Ancestry!!! (Big private Family Tree too! I am sure that it would give me some good clues where to look for this line as its not a common name!) Oh well - no one said it would be easy!
Yes, I find nice chatty messages through DNA and names in common. One site does geographical matches which is where I found loads of Seychelloise and Mauritian matches.

I too have had a second cousin that decided to keep it all to herself. Shame when you consider that she couldn't know who she is if everyone kept matches to themselves. There is something so wrong about that. One tip is to take screen shots of the page where you find matches. Then if they disappear you've at least got the last sighting!

I'll look out for your names. It probably has different spellings too.

Thanks for the offer of help with SA genealogy. I have noticed some Dutch names in the mix.

The Watch list. Go to your main page. Go to My WikiTree drop down menu. You find it about third from the end.

I need to organise myself. Then I'll send you some of my Watchlist names.

These types of manifest are always a puzzle, but what a great find!

I would absolutely assume that these two women are related, and I would also assume the initial 'S' is from her middle name, Simmone, which may have been her prefered or more commonly used name at the time. I looked through both profiles, and I would be inclined to believe that Mrs. B is most likely the mother of Miss S., but as you noted, it may possible be a grandmother.

In regards to the notation on 'Location', are you trying to determine how to fill out the WT profile fields, or what 'Location' notation format are you looking for?

Thank you!

It was wiki genealogist Alan Channon who discovered this on my behalf.  My mother had been a complete mystery to me. She hardly ever talked of the past. Today, we would probably  reckon she had PTSD. The woman in the attic, now I know to be Mrs B Guest, I only glimpsed 2 or 3 times.

To answer your question, yes I am trying to determine how to fill out the WT profile field.

When you say you "looked through both profiles", do you mean what is written on my page?

Thanks, again.
