Advice before editing this pre-1700 Mayne profile?

I have information to contribute to the profile of William Mayne Esq.. This is what I can add:

  • three wives and as many of the 21 children I can find

These are the sources I am using:

  • https://books.google.ca/books?id=K3MaAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA364&lpg=PA364&dq=captain+charles+otway+mayne&source=bl&ots=iBCs_agAp2&sig=xWaLX8KdEO6VwB44mPczq3cz4_c&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi0t931_tHeAhWXHjQIHX6TApsQ6AEwC3oECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=captain%20charles%20otway%20mayne&f=false

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

I'm not exactly sure which is the most appropriate project - possibly the British Isles sub-project of European Aristocrats, or Scotland sub-project of UK Project?

However I will say that the Burke's Peerage publication that is being used as the main source is a problem.  They are usually OK for this time period (dreadful for anything pre-1500) but I notice that the baptism dates on the Scotland's People website, which are also replicated in FamilySearch don't match with the birth years given in Burke's.

William the eldest son of with the second wife Helen Galbraith, is born 1722 according to Burke's but born 26 Aug 1725 and baptised 29 Aug see here and Robert who is supposedly born in 1724 was baptised 7 July 1728.

Hi John, Thank you for the answer. I understand what you are talking about. I guess the dates can be off, particularly in books written a while ago versus LDS transcriptions. I will contact one of the group leaders and ask more questions. I kind of started out with cleaning up a Somerset profile and wound up in the Madras Civil Service and found it fascinating. TY - Wendy :)
