Mentor is:

  • ... a member who joined WikiTree more than three months ago and has at least 1500 contributions.
  • ... familiar with the WikiTree tutorial pages.
  • ... a trustworthy volunteer who sees the best in every member/situation and can keep a clear head.
  • ... a Wiki Genealogist who has signed the Honor Code.
  • ... knowledgeable about WikiTree principles and procedures and knows how to find answers to questions.
  • ... able to communicate with guests and new members in a friendly, helpful manner.
  • ... a positive and helpful presence in the G2G Forum.
  • ... someone who hasn't been involved in a mentoring situation or had a referral badge in the past 3 months.

Being a mentor sometimes involves dealing with difficult situations, and it's not for everyone. If you're interested, please leave an Answer below, and we'll touch base with you to be sure the project is a good fit. :-)

I would leave an answer, but your points 2 and 5 are agin me.  Maybe in a year or so.  :)

We'll call that incentive, Melanie!! laugh Hope to see you back here with "answer" soon.

I have SOOOOOOOOOO much to learn first!  smiley

Melanie - if you ever want tips or have questions don't hesitate to ask an existing mentor. We are always around to help smiley

Thanks!  I tend to muddle along learning as I go, sharing what I can and helping where I can.

I just don't consider I am yet at the stage where I am "familiar with the Wikitree tutorial pages" or "knowledgeable about WikiTree principles and procedures and knows how to find answers to questions" to be of proper assistance to those needing REAL help.

Learning curve and all y'know. smiley

There is definitely a learning curve, Melanie, and it sounds like you're on the right path. It looks like you're helping a lot in G2G by finding answers to questions. That's one of the best ways to learn, in my opinion. yes

Thank you.  :)

Same with Melanie. A lot of this is still pretty confusing, so maybe I'll answer the next time you need more mentors. yes

Sounds good, Logan!  Like I mentioned to Melanie, just helping people in G2G is a great way to learn. Thanks for checking in. :-)
What kind of "difficult situations" come up?  I guess I haven't been active enough in G2G to see what you're referring to.
Hi, R --

Mostly, it's people who don't yet understand how to use WikiTree, or maybe they have a misconception about how to do something. Sometimes it's folks who don't understand the collaborative nature of WikiTree and need help understanding how to share profiles & information.

We never require that mentors teach people how to "do" genealogy, but sometimes mentors will help people get started.

Does that cover what you meant??

Julie, I could probably help with this project every once in a while. I guess I have been doing it informally with a few new members who have asked for help ranging from how to list sources to someone with an extensive family history which turned out to be full of people with questionable existence notices on existing profiles. (That person got the Gold Star for asking before reattaching!) Happy to give back in thanks to those that assisted me when I first joined.

I'd be interested in helping, if you still need people.  My experience level is mid-range, but I like to think I can explain things fairly simply and I try to be positive.

Hi Julie

I would be happy to help with this where I can.  I have found myself mentoring my own cousins through some disagreements about WikiTree profiles, so I hope that might prepare me in some way.
