Hi Julie. Thanks for asking this question as it's a good one often ignored.

Here's the basic info on How to Add Sources to Profiles. Far less complicated than it appears with just a little practice.

From my own experience with import issues of Ancestry sources, please give as much (brief) detail as you can to avoid how they often get imported with a double number system like "R344" that sends you down a screen to "Source 3432756" that gives no valid information.

Lastly, please don't cite trees at Ancestry (or elswhere) as sources or user submitted information from Ancestry, FamilySearch, etc. as those aren't really sources.

Transcibe them and add to the sources. But also add a link.

Not everyone has an Ancestry subscription.

I do it a little different.

* United States of America, Bureau of the Census. Twelfth Census of the United States, 1900. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1900. T623, 1854 rolls; database and digital images, "1900 United States Census," Ancestry.com Operations, Inc. (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 17 November 2018); Year: 1900; Census Place: Bronx, New York, New York; Page: 23; Enumeration District: 1008; FHL microfilm: 1241125.

I work all those line items into the profile and then reference the source.

Just another option.

Doug

I just happen to be looking for something and came across this posting on how individuals are writing their sources for Ancestry.

Thanks so much for educating me on the most complete way to source an item from Ancestry.

Taylor
Since this question was from nearly 18 months ago, please note that 'how to link to Ancestry' is now slightly different:

Ros,

Thanks for the update!
