How do you know that he did?

It looks like he failed to report to military authorities. Perhaps that's why he left? To get out of going to war?

Robert Bruce Hand

in the U.S., Lists of Men Ordered to Report to Local Board for Military Duty, 1917–1918

Name: Robert Bruce Hand
Gender: Male
Entrainment Date: 26 Apr 1918
Entrainment Camp: Camp Jackson
Local Board: Gaston, North Carolina, USA
Residence Year: Abt 1918

busterlee98 Apparently he changed his name when he went to the Bahamas after the incident that lead to court. I understand that he told his family about the Hand name and family when he was close to death.

@Betty, there were a number of Robert Bruce Hands in Gaston County over the years.  It seems unlikely that those records belong to him. He'd left the area long before1917/18.
