Should private info from Unlisted profile for which I'm not on the Trusted List be shown to me on a related profile?

Question

Per the Privacy Help page, "Unlisted profiles are entirely hidden from everyone except those on the Trusted List." But I'm seeing some private information from an Unlisted profile for which I'm not on the Trusted List when I view a related profile for which I am on the Trusted List. Here's an example (I've not included a profile link since the individuals are Unlisted):

I'm on the Trusted List for an Unlisted individual. This individual has a child that is also Unlisted, but I'm not on the Trusted List of the child. While on the parent's profile (in the data/relationship portion, not the bio text), I can view the child's given name and surname, with a link to the child's profile. Since the child is Unlisted, I was expecting to see [private child (<decade>s - unknown)] in the parent's profile. If I'm not on the Trusted List for the Unlisted child, should I be able to see that child's given name and surname via a parent's profile? Additionally, if I hover over the child's name/link in the parent's profile, the child's full birth date and location are revealed to me. Should I be able to see that type of private information for an Unlisted individual for which I am not on their Trusted List?

If I click on the link for the child, since I'm not on the Trusted List for the child, (as expected) all I can see is:

Living <surname>. Privacy Level: Unlisted. This anonymous profile represents a living person with the surname <surname> born in the <decade>s.

I have never paid much attention to "Unlisted" profiles until recently, but I don't believe the policy on information display has changed. Unless I am on the Trusted List for the profile, or the profile of an immediate family member, all I see (and all I used to see) is "[private daughter (1990s-unknown)]". I can only identify the Profile Manager if I have the person's WikiTree ID.

What has changed, is that due to GDPR:

1. Unlisted profiles of children under 13 have been completely removed from WikiTree unless their parents are WikiTree members (and gave permission for the profiles to be here)
2. Living people who are not members of WikiTree now have Unlisted profiles.

Until last week, almost all Unlisted profiles belonged to that first group: young children. Removal of those profiles has increased their privacy, not reduced it. The vast majority of the profiles that are now Unlisted are for people who before last week had lesser levels of privacy (such as "Private").

Sheryl, I don't think THAT is Rick's problem. If I understood him correctly, he wonders why he sees information about a profile of an unlisted person where he is NOT on the trusted list when he is on the profile of a person where he is on the trusted list. Aka why does he see informations about an adult child when he is only on the trusted list of the parents.

I can't answer the question why that happens, but I too think that is strange

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did see the post you mention and the corresponding answers when I tried to find answers to my questions before posting. But it didn't provide answers to my questions. I'm not interested in seeing the Unlisted child's profile. I think it's appropriate that I can't see that profile, since I am not on the Trusted List for that profile. I didn't ask why I couldn't see the child's profile. What I asked is:

Should I be able to see that child's given name and surname that are currently being displayed to me on the parent's profile?

Should I be able to see that child's full birth date and location that are currently being displayed to me on the parent's profile?

Sorry if my original questions were not clear. Also the child is over the age of 13.

So then conversely, if the child is over 13 and you are on the parents; TL, then you would see the child info.

If you edit your question and provide the profile number on Wikitree it would be easier to see what you are talking about, or not see it if not on TL.

GDPR makes my head roll....

Sheryl, to add the profile where he is on the trusted list, doesn't help at all, because "the parents" are just as alive as the "adult child" whose information he shouldn't be supposed to see because he is not on child's trusted list. So only the people on the trusted list see in literal sense the parent's profile, to everybody else it would appear as "unlisted".

Thanks again for responding. As Jelena says (thanks, Jelena!) and as I mentioned in my original post, I did not include links to the profiles since they are Unlisted (you can't see those profiles if you are not on the Trusted Lists of those profiles).


If, as you indicate, the Unlisted child's names, birth date, and birth location are intended to be displayed on the parent's profile in this situation, then I believe that the description of Unlisted on the Privacy Help page needs to be updated to reflect that.

In this case some of the private information entered on a profile is not "entirely hidden from everyone except those on the Trusted List" of that profile. The profile manager that added me to the Trusted List of the Unlisted parent's profile wanted to me to be able to see the private information entered on that parent's profile. But the profile manager of the Unlisted child's profile (which may or may not be the same profile manager as the parent's profile) may not want the names, birth date, and birth location of that child to be disclosed outside of the child's Trusted List. The profile manager of the child's profile may not be aware of the visibility of that info since the Unlisted Privacy Help description indicates that private info is entirely hidden based upon the Unlisted setting on the child's profile. The profile manager may need to remove/anonymize that info in the child's profile, if he/she doesn't want it to be visible as in this situation.
