Hello

My name is Timothy Ward, and as mentioned I have reason to believe that I may be a direct descendant to William B. Ward who died in 1836 at the Alamo. In looking at the various DNA Labs they are all over the place on price and the type of test they offer.

what is the best test to take in order to achieve the most detailed results to determine if it is true?

Timothy, edit your post to include the tag: dna. You get more responses. Thanks!
How will a DNA test tell you if you are related to William B Ward, has DNA been collected from his remains? I am in search of information myself, as I believe he is from the same village in Ireland as myself.

Which exact DNA test is best? The 3 companies listed all perform various test above and beyond the advertised specials they have advertised? They have tests that exceed $600 called a (y 500) or the basic test as low as $39.

I assumed the $39 test was generic barely scratching the service. I am in the dark here. So if any DNA knowledgeable individuals could tell me the type of Y test and the corresponding number I will need to submit to compare with William B. Ward in Texas would be a tremendous help.

Thank you so much.

Having used only one (23 and Me), I can't really comment on the others. You might want to look at the DNA descendants on his profile page and see what they used, although it probably doesn't matter. I don't think they're very different. I went with 23 and Me because that's the company my brother used. My BFF, a respected genealogist, used Ancestry, but I have an irrational aversion to Ancestry in general. Then consider registering your results with GEDmatch.

23 and Me will give you your ancestry background for $99, as well as a list of their clients who have matching segments of DNA. GEDmatch is free and will show you their list of people with matching segments--from any testing company that registers with them.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
