Hi John,

Wikitree is a good place to start. As you start to build your part of the tree with your relations, you will eventually run into profiles of people you are related to. It can open a lot of doors. Stay the course and take some time to start building!

I agree wholeheartedly.  And it's exciting when you find those previously unknown profiles on WikiTree. I also want to welcome you, John, to the community.

My Great Grandfather's name was Daniel Kane, I know he was in New Zealand in 1887 as he married Emma Susanna Marsh on his marriage certificate he listed his parents as Patrick Kane and Katherine McHenry and his birthplace as County Antrim, Ireland
