trying to parents first names

Question

I have put in Ronald Midmore born in 1913 Epsom, Surrey, England and his mother's maiden name was Fielder from GRO and BMD

I have checked for the marriage of Midmore and Fielder and the earliest I have found is in 1929 Hammersmith, london

Not sure if they did marry now as I have also looked on Ancestry and still nothing

If votor registration lists are available you could look there.

Couples sometimes lived together with a change of surname to make it look as though they were married. This may have even be done with a deed poll published in the Gazette if you are lucky.

They may have subsequently married, possibly because some impediment ended like a previous marriage ended through death of ex spouse. Or they might have wanted to make things solid from a legal point of view. (Children can be made retrospectively legitimate in England and Wales if they meet the conditions of the 1926 Act)

The best way would be to purchase the GRO birth registration as a pdf from Gov.com to identify Ronald's parent's names. It is possible Ronald's mother could have been widowed and married previously and therefore married using a different name to Fielder. Alternatively she may have been raised by a step-father and married using her step-father's surname.

Additionally there is only one Ronald P. Midmore b. 1913 living at Esher, Surrey (Epsom registration district) in the 1939 register, living with Nellie Midmore (b 14th June 1877), Percy Midmore (b. 6th March 1881) and Gladys M Midmore (b. 9th Feb 1915) - Gladys' birth was also registered with mother's maiden name of Fielder.

Percy Midmore did indeed marry Nellie Fielder in 1929, so it does look as though they married after the birth's of the children. Maybe Percy was already married, and the marriage certificate should tell you if he was.

Oh what a tangled web!!!

1911 Percy Midmore 30 with Nellie Coleman 32. 3 Coleman children (mother's maiden name Fielder). She is described as housekeeper (fair enough) and sister (definitely not).

1901 Nellie Coleman married to Charles Coleman, daughter Doris as in 1911. Again no record of marriage.

1891 Percy Midmore parents William Midmore and Sarah Susans. Nellie Fielder parents Isaac Fielder and Jane Dawes.

We obviously didn't believe in marriage. It will be interesting to see the 1921 census!

But presumably the 1929 marriage was an afterthought.

Not necessarily an afterthought, though...

My own grandparents separated and did not divorce until much later.  They both found new partners, but (for instance) my grandfather and his new partner did not marry until their son was 18, and my grandmother could then marry her new partner.

BTW, all these people are deceased (including the son), so I am not discussing living people here.

You could be right, although I don't think either was ever married before. I think it is more likely legitimisation of children.

I had a distant relative who had children with his housekeeper over many years and only married her shortly before he died to give her some legal rights.
