Another conundrum with possible answer -- Whatcha think?

Ann Dimmick - b 1724 (Dimmick-32) born in MA to Timothy Dimmick and Ann Bradford Dimmick married to Ebenezer Clark

Ann Dimmock - b 1724 (Dimmock-112) born in CT to Timothy Dimmick and Ann Bradford (per bio in profile) married to Samuel Stetson

See my question ?   No I'm not recommending a merge because that isn't right.  And she can't be born to the same parents in two different states.     WHICH one is right ?  Can someone tell me the problem?    Geni.com information is at the end

My Theory... can anyone verify my thoughts with sources ?

Ann Dimmock of CT - father Timothy Dimmock mother Miriam Fuller married to Samuel Stetson.

Ann Dimmick of MA - Father Timothy Dimmock mother Ann Bradford married to Ebenezer Clark.

Geni has only one Ann Dimmick with a Timothy Dimmick-father and Miriam Fuller-mother and state listed for parents as CT.. married to Samuel Stetson.

OR do I need to choose door #3 ?

IF my theory is right, I have bigger problems to fix on my own tree because I have husbands flipped to wrong Ann as well as getting children correct.

Thanks for advice !

We can't sort out our 18th-century ancestors using the spellings of their last names. At that time, people were not consistent in spelling people's names (nor much of anything else). Sometimes the same name was spelled two different ways in the same record. Accordingly, the difference between "Dimmick" and "Dimmock" and "Dimmuck" is inconsequential. (But if multiple spellings are encountered in sources, all spellings should appear somewhere in the profile data section of the profile.)

As for the conflicting genealogy, we need to get away from user-contributed online family trees (such as Geni) and use the original records (or get as close as possible to the original records) and the highest quality secondary sources (Mayflower Families Through Five Generations is one of the better ones)...
I totally agree, Ellen and I am so aware of the name changes over the years as well as within families.   Names evolve, even today.   My own husband's surname had an S added because his parents thought it "looked" better.

I do not go by the "user" websites other than guidelines.   I use this site and Geni and LDS.. if nothing comes up, nothing matches (like with this name) I go outside to other searches.  I don't take them as gospel or etched in stone.  I also do NOT use Ancestry nor will I pay to their perpetuation of errors.  It's sad that so many of the others link to them.

I'm getting my own collection of history books.. but even the "Complete book of Emigrants" is far from complete and it's a joy to find a name in those books.   I know they were written eons ago so I simply keep looking.

Other than historic sites, ALL websites for our hobby are "user" entries, including this site.   But it's a good place to start and I appreciate all the genealogists who dedicate their precious time to keeping wikitree updated and eliminating the duplicates.   Ancestry does nothing to "fix" things.  In this instance, I used Geni as the last check I did, not the first.  Wikitree is my usual go-to site.

And I know that errors can't ALL be fixed instantly.. so when I find some error like this, I'm hoping to be able to help find more correct information.  It helps me as well as others looking for up-to-date information for their trees.

Sincerely, Rebecca

Now THIS makes SENSE !!    Thank you so very much ..

Various brothers have been the problem 4 times just this week in my tree.

My BIL seems to have a knack of mixing up brothers because of the names being the same as they trickle down thru the line.

I THANK YOU for your helps and I sure do appreciate it.   Now to fix my tree.

Most sincerely,

Rebecca

Familysearch.org per "Connecticut Marriages, 1640-1939," database with images; has Ann's father's surname spelled Dimmuck and her paternal grandfather's surname also spelled Dimmuck.    FHL microfilm 1,376,017.

Ann's birth record from "CT Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," has her last name spelled Dimmick and her father's name spelled Dimmick also.

Wikipedia has her first name as Anna at Dimmick-32.

Thank you Frank, appreciate your help, but the fathers' names were not the only part of my question.  Please look at the mothers and husbands of both names in both states.   The one wikitree profile doesn't have a mother but the Geni profile has one that could fit into the missing wikitree mother.

I've found more information on Family Search but that site also has Ann married to both husbands, which is possible but...

I'm still down to two Ann Dimmock/Dimmick/Dimmuck with a Timothy as the father and mothers, Miriam Fuller and Ann Bradford.

Yes it's also possible that he married twice but only one wife can be Ann's mother.

LDS site

Thanks.. Rebecca
