Let's see if this works. Let's do it in chat!  I think al you have to do is comment...
Unfortunately, I have to check out until later this afternoon but I will be back on a full roll!! Good luck team!! Enjoy the day.
8:43 a.m. EST and we're in first place! Gooooo Sweepers!!!!
I have only slowed down because I reached the point where I have had to search for photos and documents, scan, edit, name and then upload. Whew!! I am almost out of things to scan but will keep trying.
You are certainly rocking them out. Way to go!

My teammates are the Best of the Best, they busted it out even with a 20 hour power outage in some areas!  Y'all ROCK WikiTree! Thanks to everyone who participated in filling in some of the gaps in Our Tree. Now, back to sourcing, merging and editing suggestions.

True. The rules did say “limit of ten.” If there had been an unlimited amount allowed, I could have uploaded dozens of more photos. I must have had another 50 or so for my dad, my mom, and grandparents.

That 20 hour power outage killed me.
Hi Loretta, you forgot to include the part where I said we were looking into this.  Thanks!
Still waiting.

Loretta —

It kind of feels to me that this is a bit of an overreaction. If there were truly something at stake, I can understand why you’d be so upset, but this was all for fun and a few t-shirts and coffee mug prizes awarded at random. I really don’t think it’s worth all of the drama.

Additionally, you may not be aware that after a contest like this, Eowyn is usually pretty busy with follow-up tasks. So is Ales. I’m sure they’ll look into this as quickly as they can. From what I know, this was a simple reporting error. We’ve never had a contest like this before, so it’s understandable that there might be a glitch or two. Remember:

  1. We know mistakes are inevitable. We don't want to be afraid to make them. We assume that mistakes are unintentional when others make them and ask for the same understanding.

Julie, have you looked at the facts! This was no mistake. At least 3 individuals scanned hundreds of images in to 3 profiles. Rules stat a limit of 10 image per profile. These were data dumps into free space pages. Not in accordance to the rules!

Loretta --

I did look at the facts, yes. And I fail to find anything that looked malicious. What I did find is an innocent misunderstanding of the rules.

We always learn something from these events. The biggest thing we've learned so far is how meaningful they are to so many people and how they allow us an opportunity to come together as a community and get to know one another better.
Eowyn, Thank you for taking the lead and looking at the facts. As Wikitreer's, we have an obligation to follow our Honor Code and rules, that keeps WikiTree's integrity above reproach and to a higher standard than other genealogy sites. We are not here to win little games, we ARE here to preserve and connect our past, present and future, in a solid and factual way.

The Big Winner is WikiTree! Without everyone's participation, WikiTree would not be in existence and that would be a terrible loss to the community and the World.
We  always do our best to keep the integrity of WikiTree and to uphold the Honor Code in all ways - particularly when it comes to understanding mistakes are unintentional and  always assuming the best, not expecting that people are cheaters.   Thanks!

Hey everyone, lets use this page to chat as it is the fun page and doesn't go to everyone's email. Our wonderful leader "Loretta" just wanted to get us chatting and sharing before Friday starts.

From my experience our project weekend chat works really well, so I believe we can get our Super Sweepers chat to work well too!! So, I am reposting this comment by Loretta and hope you all will join in the conversations!!   First, though making sure this is working correctly. So I will start with another post to answer Loretta's question HERE:

  • Today at 7:19 PM Loretta (Leger) Corbin wrote:

Y'all all now I'm from the South. How about replying all and tell us about yourself!

Ok, Loretta, you will love this: I am a TRANSPLANTED YANKEE!!  I was born and raised in Connecticut. But I have been residing in Tennessee now for 16 years, same place. I fell in love with the South from my service in the military being assigned to places like South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and so forth. So in order to get a little snow now and then plus nice spring and fall weather I chose Tennessee to retire in. Now what is everyone's excuse for being in the south laughcheeky!!

I married a Yankee! How's that...

I don’t think it is letting me reply all in email. Maybe it’s because I was born in Kansas and was a darned () yankee for the first 10 years of my life until we finally moved to Georgia. My first few generations of my my ancestors were born in Alabama (Chambers County and Barbour County) so that is where most of my people are from. My family really messed up the whole thing because my sisters and I were born in Kansas, Washington State, and New Jersey.

I’m a homeschool mom of a six year old, wife of a pilot, Master Gardener Extension Volunteer, part-time bookkeeper for our volunteer fire department, Assistant Unit Leader for an American Heritage Girls Troop, and I run an event at Dragon Con in Atlanta every fall. Oh, and I have an application in, awaiting acceptance, to the Daughters of the American Revolution. That’s what reawakened my passion for genealogy.

I’m a professional volunteer of “everything” according to my daughter. But she lives a active, exciting, and never a dull moment childhood!

Wow Brandy, looks like you are a real busy lady!! We are so glad you found time to do some genealogy as well. Looking forward to seeing any photos you may be able to share this weekend!!!!!
I get volun-told, by my husband, grandson, and my mother...My van thinks it is a taxi cab :)
I think we have a pretty awesome team!

Hi, y’all! A true gray Old South Southerner here, born and raised in Paw Creek, North Carolina. Retired after years (too many) in government work, and now I live in Transylvania County, for which I’m known as Lestat to the Greeters Group (Lestat the Vampire in the Ann Rice books). Married a Southern girl, raised two Southern girls.

I worked with Sandringham during the last Source-a-thon because they asked first. All my photos are for people in the South, so I joined the Super Sweepers for this challenge. I’m gonna have fun!

My ancestors are from the north! My father got sick from (and of) the cold and having to shovel snow, so he moved down south to South Carolina. I was born and raised near a military post. Married a GI / enlisted man.  Love the interaction among the GI's and people of other states. So many silly misunderstandings when trainees are in basic training and their accents and word meanings. Dad and my cousin shared many crazy stories about that but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Love South Carolina!!!!
Hi All Y'all!!  Being a true Southern girl (albeit an old one, now) I am once again joining the Southern Super Sweepers for this event. All my photos and documents are Southern ones and I am excited to be able to upload as many as possible. My three children are grown, the grandsons all in school, and my taxi services mostly not needed so digging up my roots is my full time passion. So happy to have WikiTree and all the wonderful people working together to build our tree.

Bless all Y'alls big hearts and let's have fun!!
I'll double dip that Bless all Y'alls big ole hearts! Glad I finally got you on the front page!!!!
I'm from Texas and my husband is from Pennsylvania, figure that one out. He says he got to Texas as soon as he could! So glad he did. Most of my family hails from Kentucky (oh it is beautiful there). We live in the "Bald Prairie" as my grandmother called it. Just plain ole dirt and cattle. My special needs grandson lives with us as does my almost 90 year old mother. Talk about stories, oh lordy can we tell 'em.

Welcome to all our team mates, let's have some fun!!!
This is my first time here.  I was born and raised in Georgia, well, except for a short few preschool years in the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee where my Dad's family hails from.  I am way too old to be a Georgia peach and think my body has Gone With The Wind.  I think a little slower these days but it seems to keep me out of so much trouble. I have been working on my family tree since the 1960's.  I have 2 children, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren plus all the steps make me have a huge personal family and that does not include the bunches when you add in the siblings and theirs.  Alas, none of them are interested in genealogy, reading but not working it.  Good luck every one and it is great seeing where everyone is from.
Hi, Paula! I’ve got East Tennessee Ancestry. One of the hardest parts of my family to work.
Thank  you, Loretta and thank you for being our fearless leader!! I forgot to say in my post that I am from Texas and Louisiana, currently living just north of Dallas. So happy to be here!!

I don't know about fearless but I do try to have fun.  :)  My oldest son lives in Princeton just north of Dallas. Small world!

Looking to Rock this Thon out...if the servers hold up.

I would put a countdown clock on here, except I would have to remember how to do that.  :)

Everyone watchout for the online video chats and drawings for goodies maybe.

See it here: https://calendar.google.com/calendar?cid=NmliZzFvbmllN2QxcDVmZDFjanM0ajZucTBAZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ

Here is a Link to our Spreadsheet but I am unclear how we will use it for this Thon https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jlRaiRtaMEpsPdeuRLS2ids4HAXJyGVCKiQyEMh4NNE/edit#gid=1909036484

Wow, the Calendar is cool! Added all the Video Chats to my Google Calendar with one click!!! I like easy!
Pip, You will have to send me a message to my email with your family names from east Tennessee and I will see if any of them are in my tree or if I have any extra info lying around about them. I have about 35k names in my tree but not all of them are direct line ancestors.  They are on my computer not on WikiTree.

Good Morning!!!

Let the Good Times Roll

Fire up those scanners

Post, Post, Post!

How do we keep track of how many photos we have uploaded?  I have done 4 and none of them asked if it was part of the scan-a-thon.
Same question for me - I just uploaded my first scan and no where that I can find to score it!!

I uploaded 1 and then checked here https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ScanAThon/2019/User.htm and it counted it. The profile has to be Public for it to count.

I see your name here: https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ScanAThon/2019/ with 4 scans.

Laptop up and working!!! Copying EVERYTHING to a mega drive, 3 terabytes. Two pics uploaded to profiles.

Everybody, it takes a minute for the results to post, so be patient.

We’re off and running! Goooo Sweepers!
Thank you Brandy, so it is doing it based on our user profile number I guess.  Just wondered since on a lot of things it asks if it is part of a thon.  This is my first time actually doing one of these.
Well, I’ve got over 100 in. I’m going to have to go in the hunt.

We’re in 2nd place right now. 12:14 pm EST. Let’s go, Sweepers! Yea!!

Y'all are doing an AWESOME job! Keep up the good work!

Go Super Sweepers!!!

Scan Counts

I have uploaded way more than the count shows. So, I am CLUELESS on this issue. I have even opened profiles and counts don't change.

How are y'all doing as far as your counts? Let me hear from you.

My count is accurate. Hmm....
Made it back to the house...Will start adding more images!
I feel like I have uploaded way more than the count shows too but I have had to add quite a few profiles before I could upload the photo to them so I think that is why it feels like so many more to me.
I’ve had to create profiles, too, for photos I found.
Sorry folks, but I’m pretty well shot, physically as well as having run out of things to scan. I had lots for some people and only one or two for others. Some I had so many that I couldn’t use them because of the limit of 10 per profile. I’m going to Mom’s tomorrow to see if she has any dead people pics. I’m sorely lacking on documents and gravestones. I tied for first just now, I think, but I’m going to get blasted the rest of the weekend. I heard that someone has about 300 grave photos to upload. I gave it my best.

Fun: watching the WikiTree YouTube videos, reading the comments here, adding to the best genealogy website in the world. How cool is that?!

For lack of photos and such to scan, I’m going to finish my last Orphan Trail profile tomorrow. Y’all hang in there. We’re in second place!

Outstanding job everyone!

Well darn, Pip, you only did 157 scans, what more can we possibly ask from you. GREAT JOB!!!!!! you are Number #1 in our book. wink Thank you!!

I agree with Loretta too, we are all doing great, second place, thats some awesomeness!!!!

I have to stop now too, my eyes are running together.  I have plenty that could be entered but most of them do not have profiles that I have found so far and I don't think they are in my family tree either. I have hundreds of cemetery photos, have been working mostly on the same cemetery all day.  Well off and on, I did have to go get groceries.  I kind of have a problem there, I like to eat.  See you all tomorrow.

I agree! A great team to work with. What a super job the Sweepers have done today. I’m hoping everyone else has exhausted their stuff, too! (Except us, of course! laugh)

@Paula: I with you! Time to eat!
I see some of you are calling it a night and so am I. Tomorrow is a new day and I still have a lot to upload. Good night, Y'all!!

Good Morning! It's a new day! Keepers those scanners going!

Super Sweepers are hands down the Best Team!!!

Running low on stuff to scan, but I’ve got a few other bible records I can get in. My goal: 200 before the end. My wife, the WikiTree widow, is hunting up stuff for me from her side of the family. laugh

Go Sweepers!!!

Wow, this is so much harder than I thought it would be since I have all these photos just sitting in files on my computer.  I have added to my tree both online and on my computer, I have adopted several orphaned profiles, and I still am only at adding 80 photos.  Break time!  My head hurts.
It’s my eyes that are suffering! I’m just short of my goal of 200. I’ll try and get them tonight. I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. I am sooo tired!

We’re way in first place. No slacking now. Let’s go, Sweepers!!!
Pip, I see you are over your goal of 200!!! Great job. Understand the eye thing - I am breaking now because my eyes really need a rest and.....I am hungry. Be back later!!

Virginia, I found a cache of old photos in a box. Drove me back to the scanner. I did meet my goal! Finally!

Gotta get a shower. I got commented on during one of the videos chats!! Hahaha! I was wearing the same t-shirt two days in a row. How funny is that!! wink

Yes, Pip, I heard that comment and saw your photo!! This stuff is addicting but I am forcing myself to take frequent breaks. I see our team is being gained on - hope everyone keeps going through tomorrow!
Got the shower, and now I have my other WikiTree tee on!

Y'all are rocking this out. I have run out of photos short of posting all of the downloaded census records I have on my computer.

I am so proud of each and everyone of y'all.

Keep doing what you are doing.

Thanks to you, too, Loretta! Takes a great leader, too, ya know?!
An early Good Morning, Y'all!! I ran out of things I wanted to post last night but dug through my files and found a stack of new stuff. Will have to scan it before posting so I am getting an early start on that! Will be back on in an hour or so.
Well, there won’t be any scanning for me today.... until the power gets restored. We had an ice storm last night. The power went out at about 11 p.m. EST. It’s now 8 a.m. EST. Our second power outage this season. The last one was 40 hours long. I’m sure it’s just another tree down somewhere. Nothing to do but wait it out.

In spite of this, it is really pretty out there with all the ice in the trees,  it it’s alreayd starting to melt. I’ll be back if and when the power gets restored. Gooooo, team!!!
It’s on you for a while, Virginia. Read my comment posted just after yours. I’ll let y’all know when I’m back up and running.
Kiwi Crew did a heck of a lot of scanning yesterday. They’re about 47 behind us. We had a huge lead last night. They must have scanned like blazes while we were asleep.
Well, typical when one is in a hurry. My scanner and computer decided not to talk to each other this morning. So frustrating. After my long-suffering husband had his 2nd cup of coffee, he made them talk again. So, I just finished scanning and am about to begin uploading. Pip, so sorry about your power - hope it recovers soon as we need you back. Let's go team!!!
Wouldn’t you know I found a whole bunch of photos and such just now?!?! Still no power. 2000+ customers out in our area.
Ice Storms make for beautiful photography! Get out and enjoy the pretty little crystals.
We have widened that spread between us and the Kiwi Crew, for now that is.  I finally made it over 100 but not sure I can make it to 200, I am trying though. I am wearing out fast today.

I love to see the pictures of snow and ice storms but I sure don't like my power to go out, it gets kind of cold when it does.  Hope your power is back soon Pip.
Excellent work, Paula! It is a tiring exercise, isn’t it? I really want to get my new finds in. Just gotta wait it out.
Stay SAFE and WARM, unless you just have an uncontrollable urge to run out and buy generator for your scanner and computer.... :)
This old family poem may or maynot qualify for the Thon but is it too cute not to share. My Uncle Jay had a way with words and a sense of humor to match.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/751588/shared-photo-old-family-poem-as-remembered-by-jay-leger

Sunday afternoon - Let's see, too bad our team isn't running the government right now, we'd have everyone up and working! Y'all are the most awesome group of people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. As we say in Texas, 'I'm fixin' to cook up some grub, then I'm gonna see if I can find some more tidbits to scan."

Rock On!!!

Can't keep my eyes open any longer.  I was trying to get to 150 but kept messing up on the last few I did so decided it was best to stop.  If they magically pop back open in a few like they sometimes do I will come back and upload some more.

We are doing great, GO! Southern Super Sweepers!!

The Southern Super Sweepers is the Best All Round Team!!!

Th empower just came back on. I’m up and running... scanning.

YEAH!!!!

GO, PIP, GO!

14 more scanned and uploaded! More coming!
You go guy!
Welcome back, Pip!! I am still slowly plugging along but will have to check out before long.

Got another 50 in, but I think I’m scanned out. Nothing left. It’s 12:05 a.m. Monday, so off to bed. Hope our lead holds!!!

Great job, everybody!!

 Zzzzzz

We lost by 12 scans. I didn’t have anything left. I didn’t prepare well enough. I probably could have gotten some photos from my mother, but it might not have done any good as I had already loaded up the more recent generations.

Ah, well. Next year. I’m going to work in my Transylvania County lines (since I live there) and hop in the car and hit the cemeteries for all those grave stones.

We did great! What a wonderful team!

I agree Pip, We have the VERY BEST TEAM! And we follow the rules!

It is easy to win, when you don't follow the rules. This is as bad as a data dump! They broke every rule!
Sorry y'all, I had enough photos to really rock this thing but my body and mind gave out and I fell asleep and only just now managed to wake up.  I should have offered to share my photo folders with everyone and let others help me upload them.  The problem is that in most cases there were no profiles for them.  I doubled my family tree online this weekend by adding profiles.  Also a lot of the photos I have are not family.  I make cemetery photos to go on my web pages and I have hundreds, maybe even thousands and have to search for profiles on all of them.

But we still did a wonderful job!!
I could not be more proud of a team than I am this one. Everyone of you Rocked it out this weekend and the wonderful thing about is, y'all are still going adding sources and fixing those suggestions

We walk with our heads held high, for we know we did our best! The Clean-a-thon is around the corner...

Some of the rules of the game:  :)

Prizes
We'll be doing random drawings during our periodic video hangouts. Winners will receive their choice of a Scan-a-Thon t-shirt or mug.

Participation

Participation means uploading original images to WikiTree person profiles or free-space profiles.

If you don't have boxes of unscanned photos laying around (like some of us do!) you can still participate. Examples of other items that can be scanned and uploaded:

  • Letters
  • Postcards
  • Ephemera
  • Funeral Cards
  • Primary Documents

If you don't have a scanner, there are apps like Genius Scan and JoyFlips that are free and function like a scanner. See Greg Slade's G2G post for more information.

Only upload images once

Images should only be uploaded once. If you have different resolutions of the same image, upload the higher-resolution version. However, note that images cannot be over 10MB. If there is more than one person in a photo, identify the additional people on the image edit page after uploading it.

For more info, see our our Photos FAQ.

Only original images

The challenge is limited to original images, i.e. images that you have scanned, photographed or otherwise obtained yourself. Images downloaded from other websites should not be counted.

This does mean that it will be harder to participate if you don't have photos and documents that need to be scanned. You might consider asking family members, contacting a local library or historical society, or coordinating with your team members to find other sources.

Only 10 images per profile

WikiTree isn't meant for storing large collections of family photos. If everyone scanned all their childhood photos and put them on WikiTree we couldn't remain a free website. Other websites are designed for photo storage. We are a genealogy website.

Therefore, we have made the rule that only the first 10 uploads to a profile count. That is, if you're uploading more than 10 photos of the same person, only the first 10 will count toward your Scan-a-Thon score.

Only Public and Open profiles

The only images that will count are those uploaded to Public and Open profiles. Private images will not be counted.

Always respect copyrights

See the Legal Genealogist's "Copyright and the old family photo." If you aren't sure if something counts post your question in this G2G thread [coming soon].

Tracking

Tracking and reporting will be done automatically.

I do not see my name on the team for the Scan-A-Thon but I do have the Badge and just posted to G2G but thought I would follow up here. If there is still room on the team, I would love to join this team again since I participated on it for the Source-A-Thon. Really looking forward to this event!!

Hi Virginia , welcome to the Southern Super Sweepers!! Hopefully you are now on the team page, but we hope you chat here with us as well.
You are there now, sorry, it has been one of those crazy days! And my wonderful "Yankee Husband" volunteered me to pick up trash at The Famed Cadillac Ranch tomorrow (in the Mud).

Just chatting (checking in):

I was born in Ohio, grew up in Michigan, met my Savannah-born husband in Rhode Island.  We got married in Tennessee and moved near Atlanta, Georgia and we've been here since.  I dearly hope this will be the closest to the gnat-line that I'll get.  My mother-in-law says I'm a Yankee but I consider myself a southerner.  And, I have an apron that says I cook southern-style to prove it.

Hi All! I scanned 113 pics today. Tonight my laptop went haywire (yes, where all the pics are). If it just overuse, I’ll be ok, but if not I’m out. Will let you as soon as I know something in the morning. crying

by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Oh no, maybe you just overheated it... hoping all is well in the morning.
Thanks, Dorothy! I’m just sick. Downloading drivers for my desktop now. Will rescan in the morning if all else fails.
Oh no, Pip!  113.  Do you do everything at lightning speed?  I've done 2.  Actually I've scanned 3 but I don't know who is in pic #3.  Best of luck.
Wonky laptop. It’s at least ten years old. The desktop is new, but it’s shut down, too. Had to reboot.
