Advice before editing this pre-1700 Tilley profile?

I have information to contribute to the profile of William Tilley. This is what I can add:

  • Secondary sources that list his father, brothers, grandfather, uncle, cousins, wife, and wife's parents.  I'd like to create profiles for his family and connect his wife to her parents (Earle-11 and Slocum-127).

These are the sources I am using:

  • See profile; I have listed several secondary sources.  (Primary sources would be helpful, if someone could point me in the right direction.)

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

(I am also planning to expand the biography for his son William; I have sources and just need to add them.  There's a fair bit of material about him and he deserves better than what I have so far.)

Hi Lisa

For the England side of the Tilley family you could contact the England Project. The G2G post to answer to join is here. Some more research would be good before adding any more profiles. At the moment it is not clear whereabouts in England he came from. Two secondary sources give two locations, Devon and Exeter, as his place of birth, but neither have visible sources.

Another project would be better suited for the US side and could perhaps help you with his post immigration life.

There are a lot of clues in the secondary sources, and a lot of Tilleys on Wikitree, including a couple that are managed by projects.

Thanks!  I'll do some more digging before I proceed.  I think Exeter is in Devon, so those secondary sources might not be in conflict, but I'll see what else I can find out.  Suggestions for a US project?  He immigrated too late to be PGM, so maybe just the US History/Rhode Island projects?
Lisa, a birth record and/or a source that confirms a precise location in Devon would help but England will have a look anyway. There were Tilleys in neighboring counties of Dorset and Somerset which could be relevant down the track.

Could luck with your search, will let you know if anything is found.
One of the sources mentioned Ideford, which is near Exeter, Devon. There was a William Tilley baptised there in 1690. I can't view the record on my iPhone but here is the link:

Thanks, Joe!  I've added that to a Research Notes section for now.  Looks very promising.

The one Joe has found looks promising. There are James and John as well as a lot of others.

Bear in mind these are christening dates, not birth.

Thanks!  This looks like a good place to start.
