Can I use this photo on here for a profile picture

+8 votes

I found a picture of a distant relative on the internet it states that its is out of copyright and can be used for research or study but would that include using it on here? Picture of Hugh Pye

Also whilst I am asking questions about Hugh, would he be classed as a notable?

I have no knowledge of wheat propagating, cross germination etc so not sure how important his research is / was

Hi Heather, it definitely states it is out of copyright and not just for research or study purposes.  It's also from the National Library of Australia who would know about Australian copyright.  Whether that applies elsewhere is another question but I can't see why you can't use it as his profile picture.

I think the criteria for a notable is that he or she has a Wikipedia article, but given he has an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, I think there is no doubt he is an Australian notable.

oh Thanks John is there a category for Australian Notable? Now to figure out how to attach the photo
I'm pretty sure if it's out of copyright in Aus it's out of copyright in the US, but I don't know about Europe and elsewhere.  (Wouldn't the Aus copyright status count, though?)
