Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help.

Or if you just want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up.

Or if you even want to JOIN the Notables project and get a badge

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and noone can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they should be DEAD!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2018

Above is a list of those who have passed already this year.

Have fun!!

OK Link to this thread from the Notables page has been updated for December. I will have to remember to update that link every month!!

in The Tree House by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

My notables that can be notables are already connected and I stickered them in Novembercheeky

(The rest of them don't qualify as they don't have Wikipedia pages or Dictionary entries .. and I don't have the energy, or the access to places for information, to tackle anyone on that list.)

I have added a Notables sticker to the following profile of Charles "Charlie" Kavanagh. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kavanagh-718

On a side note, his grandfather Joseph Kavanagh, is the maternal 2x great-grandfather of my ex, wonder if that may be why my ex is a White Sox fan and not a Cubs fan :)

Having previously lived in Chicago...surprise

Hi Robynne,

I have been coming across Notables who are tagged with Quebec Notables , however, they are actually from New France days, so Québec notables is a misnomer.  Can I create a category for them and amend these people's stickers to reflect the reality?
You should talk to someone from the Categorization Project about that, Danielle. I'm not an expert in the category department.

Also please note that there is a new January 2019 Notables thread floating around here - somewhere.....  LOL see link below

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/742559/notables-january-2019?show=742559#q742559
Danielle, I would say to go ahead and create a category like Personnalités de la Nouvelle-France (or whatever the correct term would be in French) and stick that after the pipe in the Notables Sticker template in the affected profiles.

The new category should also be linked upward to the Nouvelle-France category, and also to Personnalités (or whatever the French category is for Notables).

thanks Greg, Notables is also the French term for them, so will be easy to understand for all.  laugh

Category created,   applies to all of New France, not just the St-Lawrence valley ones.

And sticker for anyone wanting to use it : Notables de Nouvelle-France

Working on two more rock stars -- Keith Relf of the Yardbirds, and Andy Fraser of Free!

Relf-160 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fraser-6801

Fraser's is at a standstill because I need to glean info from his autobiography to be able to properly identify his mother. His father was Guyanese, a place foreign to me insofar as genealogy goes. Relf is slowly but surely coming along. His genealogy seems rather twisted -- his grandfather's "father" died 4 years before his birth, the real father may have been a painter "lodging" with the widowed mother in the next census, and I'm starting to suspect that same grandfather married his brother's widow.

I've added many notables and have even more work left to do on those I picked. I'm not ready to advertise I am in search of help but I doubt I'll be able to connect any on my own! I tend to like writers, artists, architects, philosophers ... and tend to like areas of Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia. So, in a sense, I've already unofficially joined! If you want to make it official with a badge please do. I'll be contributing here and there, badge or not. smiley

Welcome to the Notables Team, Susan!

Susan, there are a bunch of hints on connecting people on the Connectors Chat page.

Thank you, Greg!

Am continuing to connect Australian Army Generals to the big tree.  182 of them and I am possibly half way.  I know what I'm wishing for for Christmas!

Greg,

Is there not a Wikipedia page for deaths in December 2018? Or will the 2017 page be updated to 2018?

For 2018, all the deaths are on one big page, probably because the year is still going on. 2017 has been divided up into months, or you can even drill down to the specific day in 2018, 2017, or prior years, or you can see all the people listed on Wikipedia who were born or died on December 4 (or any other date).

In this case, I decided to link November 2018, since it's the last complete month, and December 2017, since it's a year ago this month. But if this date (or any other) is meaningful to somebody, they can always drill down to more detail. (For instance, somebody might decide to do a mini-project of adding all the deceased notables from Wikipedia who were born or died on their birthday.)

Wikipedia says Robert McClure is first cousin to Oscar Wilde, so should be easy to connect him.
Actor Ken Berry also passed the first of December

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Berry-13354

A page has been started and I'm still working on a connection for him.
And apparently a Tony Award winning actor - Philip Bosco - passed away recently too. I don't believe he currently has a profile yet.
British professional wrestler and utter crazy person Thomas Billington aka Dynamite Kid, died December 5.
Philip Bosco? Really? Oh no - he was a lovely actor. I remember him in several TV series and movies!!!
While not a direct Notable, Floyd Parton, singer/songwriter who was a part of his sister Dolly's career, has died. I'm working with the current PM to open his profile and update it with the information. Good opportunity to note that living parents and siblings of Notables are also recommended to include the Notables as manager, so that we don't run into locked profiles when updates are needed. Now I need to get off my soap box and go get dinner...

If any of you manage the profiles of any living notables, and those notables have one of the "Unconnected Notables of ..." categories on their profiles, would you mind please replacing those categories with ? That could clear out a lot of profiles that people can't work on from the Unconnected Notables categories, and also keep all the living notables in one place to make them easy to find, should the need arise.

I'm gonna do a profile for Markus Beyer, a former boxing World Champion of WBC from Germany who died on Monday. I suppose he still doesn't have a profile.

Grrr, I would have rather not had the opportunity to make that profile. :(

If you know German have a look here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beyer-1491. I wrote his biography in German.

I was working through the sub-pages under the Connectors Chat page after neglecting them for far too long, and I realised that I really needed to ask for help, because it's just too big a job for one person to keep up with. So, I posted a series of steps on Adding unconnected branches to the "Let others know what locations you are working on" page

It belatedly occurs me that some of those steps (5-8) could apply to the Notables Project, too. So if you want to ask for help in connecting a notable, you can follow those steps to add that notable to the table, and hopefully a Connector will come along and help you out with connecting that notable.

I just discovered the British reality Art History program called Fake or Fortune on youtube this week.

One of the episodes happened to mention art works stolen by the Nazis during WW2. Naturally I went off on a tangent and researched more about the art stolen by the Nazis including the fascinating portrait known as the Woman in Gold - Adele Bloch-Bauer. Then I discovered the story of Adele's niece Maria Altmann who spent years legally trying to get the paintings back, which she finally did so in 2006.

I went looking on wikitree and found Adele Bloch-Bauer and her husband and her brother in-law but no neice named Maria.

So I have added the profile for Maria Altmann nee Bloch - the name was not changed to Bloch-Bauer until the following year after Maria was born.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bloch-408

If anyone else would like to add more details to the biography, they are welcome to do so. I dont think I can summarise the Wikipedia story very well. For the record - Maria died in 2011.

PS I dont think anyone from this family is connected to the global tree - so maybe the Connectors can work on this? They were a prominent Jewish family from Austria.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I have now also added, Maria's husband Fritz, as well as Fritz's father Karl and his brother Bernhard. Mainly because Bernhard also has a Wikipedia page!!

But noone in this family is connected to the Global tree yet!!
I'm made some contributions here and there. Holler at me if I messed something up or you don't like the results. I've added a bunch of other nearby profiles and need to go back and make those more robust. Thanks for starting Maria's profile!
Thanks Susan.

Still plugging away at actor Ken Berry's family - seeking a connection. If anyone wishes to assist, please jump in. I'm currently working his "Munson" roots and digging into the "Ohrberg" family. Couldn't really find any other footholds to start with for connections.

OK - I think I have a connection to the global tree now. Links should update tonight. Time to move on to the next one...

I have three notables that I know of that are in my family tree: Sen. Floyd K. Haskell ,D-CO) . Annie Louise Cary who was an opera singer from the 1800's and in Wikipedia) and  Homer Slate Taylor who was an amateur archer in the early 1900's, participated in the 1904 Olympics and national championships and was inducted into the Archery Hall of fame.  I have some of Homer's profile done, but he doesn't have a Notables sticker yet nor is he in the notables category. Annie Louise needs a small bio written for a large career. No sticker, no category. I have a profile for Floyd stickered and categorized but only a draft of a profile.  All connected to the World.  Maybe I should join the project so I will feel more accountable.  P.S. Homer supposedly trained Douglas Fairbanks to shoot a bow and arrow as prep for his role in Robin Hood.  If anyone is interested in trying to source that out I'd be appreciative and the Archery Hall of Fame would happy to have that information,  They gave me permission to use their picture of him on wikitree.  If anyone know how to get it from my computer onto his profile, I could use some help.
by Peggy Moss G2G6 Mach 2 (26.4k points)
If you would like to join the project, please let me know. I can award you the badge.

As far as the photo goes, you'll have to provide a bit more details. Did you receive it in a file? Or is it on a web page? Do you know what format the picture is in? We can start with that and work our way to instructions.

And for the profile, is this the one?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Taylor-51899

I usually try to add the link to the profile I'm working on, as it makes it easier for people to find it and help out.
Sorry I didn't put the link on there, but the link you have is correct.  The picture I have downloaded is from the Archery Hall of Fame, and I have their permission to use it,  I also happens to be the same as the larger picture on the Wikipedia site. I am reasonably sure that the one I have is a jpg.  I am going to also need to get  of Annie Louise Cary from Wikipedia or scan one of the many I have here. Link to her profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cary-1657

I did quite a bit of work on Karen Carpenter's profile awhile back. I grew up not far from her home town of Downey California and her music was a part of my life.
by Bart Triesch G2G6 Pilot (270k points)
Thanks for that Bart. but Karen and Richard Carpenter were connected to the Global Tree quite some time ago!!   March of this year according to the notes on my profile!!
Robynne, I should have said, "I did quite a bit of work on Karen Carpenter's ancestors ..." Not her profile.
I was born in Downey, California.  While growing up my parents would take us and we'd drive to the Carpenter's home during the holidays.  They had the best Christmas lighting display in the neighborhood.  Absolutely beautiful!  Thanks for sharing. your comment brings back precious memories.

My notable that has captured my interest is baseball player John Tortes "Chief" Meyers, New York Catcher. (c. 1911)  I'd be interested in participating in Native Americans and Cahuilla Culture of California (sub-projects) or perhaps begin one.

Well, there is a Native American project that focuses on that area - you can read more about it here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Native_Americans

But if you're still interested in Notables (which overlaps pretty much all projects in one way or another), let me know and I'll get you the badge.

Since a longtime TV personality, Don Webster, who rose to fame in Cleveland, Ohio just passed I decided to look into him. He has a Wikipedia article but did not have a profile on WikiTree that I could see so I created one for him, Webster-9496. He did many things on Television including hosting a nationally syndicated show, The Upbeat Show, I have found very little about him as yet and he is unconnected due in part to his age and nationality, He was born in 1939 and raised in Canada so records of his early life are not available yet but hopefully as the days pass more information about his parents will be able to be found.

Just found this report

Sondra Locke - former girlfriend to Clint Eastwood - died on 3 November 2018 - aged 74.

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/actress-sondra-locke-longtime-clint-eastwood-co-star-partner-died-012844722.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sondra_Locke

She has a Wikipedia page and does NOT appear to be on Wikitree at all.

If someone want to work on her ancestry?

OK she was born Sandra Louise Smith and there are lots of unlisted profiles for that name!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I just confirmed that when trying to add a new profile with that name that nothing comes up as a match, so she should be good to add a new profile.

Marc Bloch, historian and co-founder of the Annales school, will show as connected once the system updates.

by Greg Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (371k points)

And you were very well inspired to work on Marc Bloch, as it turns out one of his mother's cousins married Pierre Aucouturier. With that we connect Vincent Auriol (after the next update).

Great!  My inspiration for working on Marc Bloch was picking up a copy of French Rural History at a local bookstore.
It was a lucky coincidence that I just had been working on Mme Auriol's family (and noticed the name "Schmoll") and then found the same name connected to Marc Bloch's family (and soon enough to remember it).

Vincent Auriol's Wikipedia page boldly asserts that his great-grandmother Anne Brunel was related to Isambard Brunel, now this does not seem likely at all.

Last month I started working on the ancestry of Paul Doumer, a French President with a very atypical carreer. He lost 4 sons in the Great War and was assassinated in 1932. His parentage is very confusing (the man who was assumed to be his father has been recently disproven - the name was right but everything else was wrong) and I still haven't got around to writing a coherent account of this on his profile.

I'm also working on Michelle Aucouturier, wife of President Vincent Auriol.

I've created and connected Dorothy (Burr) Thompson to her mother Anna Brown. Dorothy and her husband were both archeologists. Her mother was a writer.

I'm in...now if I can just figure out how to make it work.
by Jennifer Lapham G2G6 Mach 1 (17.6k points)
I just added Increase Allen Lapham-685 to WT and made him a notable.  I have a lot more to add to his profile (like his mother - I didn't realize she didn't have a profile) but I ran out of time.  I couldn't figure out where to add the link to WT on his Wikipedia page.  Could somebody tell he how?
I think we've been down that road before, and Wikipedia tends to reject links to WikiTree, but if you wish to try you can certainly do so. You'd need to be an editor for Wikipedia and add the profile link in the links section. But the Wikipedia "powers that be" have stated in the past that links to other wiki's are not generally welcome on their site.
Thanks for the response.  I was following instructions on the WT Notables  page so somebody really should edit that out.

Actually, you don't link directly from their Wikipedia entry, but rather from their Wikidata entry, which you can find from their Wikipedia entry. The instructions are:

  • If the person has a Wikipedia entry:
    • Add "See also:" under the Sources section, and then add "* Wikipedia: Person Name" on a new line, replacing "Person_Name" with whatever is in the URL for their entry on Wikipedia after the last slash. (In other words, if the Wikipedia URL is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II, then that line should read "* Wikipedia: Elizabeth II".)
    • Click on the "Wikidata item" link in the left-hand menu of their Wikipedia entry, and note the number you see on the top line in medium-sized grey type that begins with "Q". Add "* Q1234567" on a new line, replacing "Q1234567" with the number you have noted. (For example, Queen Elizabeth's Wikidata number is "Q9682".)
    • Scroll down the Wikidata page, and check to see if there is a WikiTree ID entry. If not, click on the "+ add" link at the bottom of the page, type "WikiTree ID" into the property box (it should bring up a match after you type the first few letters), enter that person's WikiTree ID into the next box, and click on "save". (For example, Queen Elizabeth's WikiTree ID is "Windsor-1".)
Charles Willard Lapham-636 does not have a Wikipedia page but his house does: https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Lapham-Patterson_House.  So is he considered Notable?
