Brick wall: 1773 marriage in east lothian, scotland

+1 vote
Hi Everyone! My brickwall is in distinguishing which Mary is the true partner of Robert Howden (Howden-319).  It is either Mary Myrrilees b1745 in Athelstaneford, east lothian (Merrielees-2) or Mary Merrilees b1753 in Saltoun, East Lothian (merrilees-481).  I have sought the marriage registration however this does not give me any clues as to Mary's parentage! Can anyone think of another way to sort this matter out, please?

There's two possible testaments on ScotlandsPeople for one of the Mary's parents (Mary daughter of George Merrilees and Ann Richardson):

Merrylees, George; 10/3/1790; residing at Salton, son of John M., farmer at Killeith, Haddingtonshire; TD; Edinburgh Commissary Court; CC8/8/128

Merryless, George; 25/11/1789; residing at Salton, son of John M., farmer at Killeith, Haddingtonshire; TD; Edinburgh Commissary Court; CC8/8/128

Given the residence details and the reference numbers are the same, it's possible that it's two index entries for the same confirmation.  However it's a Testament Dative (TD) which means there's no will, just an inventory.  If you want to chance 10 credits (£2.50) you could download a copy and hope that one of the executors is Robert Howden, son-in-law, which would solve your problem.  However, there's also a chance that the executor is Joe Bloggs, Solicitor!

Hi Sheena,  Thank you for your answer, I would not have thought of this - obviously!

I may have to chance it, as I have already sought and paid for a copy of the marriage registration to no avail!

Wish me luck!

Mirrilees-11 is attached to both Mary’s but in different ways.  So maybe there are more problems And one might be Aunt to the other?

I found a Scotland's People record for a Mary Merrilees, B 02 May 1753 to George Merrilees and Ann Richardson in Saltoun, There is a east or west Saltoun today, south east of Edinburgh maybe 5 miles.

I also found a Ancestry record for a George Houden B 29 Aug 1752, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Its probably your person.

I cannot find an actual marriage record that comes close to these people, but since they are the closest in age this is probably your couple.

They weren't good spellers back then.

Hi Mark, Thank you for your reply - and apologies for my late response.  I hadn't found any information regarding Robert as yet, thank you.  I have a marriage entry for Robert Houdin and Mary Myrrilees at Athelstaneford.  Yes, regretfully, spelling leaves a lot to be desired!
