Isn't a persons will a good source?

Question

So I had another wikitree person to ask a question about proof of a source for a profiles child. So I found the original will and put it on the fathers profile since it was his will. And it listed that child and all his others. I did this for proof of the parentage of this child and maybe others.  Another person on the trusted list took it off with no explanation.This is not fair. What do I do about that?

A will is an excellent source. If someone else transcribed it then you shouldn't copy it verbatim to Wikitree without obtaining permission, just link it. (Good idea to add what is said about everyone on their own profiles in case the source is removed from the internet). If you transcribed it yourself it would better to post it on a free space page then it's easy to link to everyone mentioned. A long will can make a profile look overly wordy. That said, whoever did this should have left a note as to why it was done. The more wills the better say I but it's an awful lot of work.

Have you asked them why they removed it? If you uploaded an image. They may have removed it because of copy-right/terms of use for familysearch/ancestry concerns rather than because it wasn't a good source. I would message the person and find out why they removed it.

Hi Teresa.  If I were you I would send a note to the other person and ask for an explanation.  The only reason I can think of for removing it would be if it's something you copied from another web site or some publication whose terms of service prohibit you from re-posting their content.  Even if there's a valid explanation, in my view the answer is yes, it's still a good source and you could still cite it as the source of the data you found.

Some good answers here already.  Lets assume that the photo you uploaded isn't protected.  Did you add the will as a source to the profile?  At a minimum, you should add that will information to the sources and it is a also a good idea - whether you can keep the photo up or not - paste an index, or an abbreviated narration of the index of the will to the bio in the === Death and burial === section.
