how do i find the regiment for my gr.grandfather that served in royal engineers approx 1870 uk

my gr,grandfathers name was John Knight. he died in 1880 at 36 years of age but had left the service at that time. what i am looking for is where he was born in 1844. so many people with same name. have searched family search and many more sites. my cousin has looked on ancestry as well. he was married to Jane Savage in 1874 in Farnborough, Hampshire, England.

Hi Wayne, thank you for your answer,

he had 3 children. my grandfather John was born in 1873 before they wer married. the 2d was born in 1876 and the 3rd was born after he died him and Jane lived in Odiham when he died. he was working on a farm at the time. the childrens names were John, William and Rosa. that is the question, i do not know here J. ohn Knight was born. that is what i am trying to find out.
