I wanted to share this ferrotype family photo of Lodema Newcomb with the community. Location: Boonville, Oneida, New York, United States. Date: 1858.

The process is actually applied to iron plate, they were cut to size with tinning shears hence the nickname tin type. This was state of the art circa. 1856 - 1862 when glass plate prints were introduced.

I prefer to call it photography of the Iron Age.

Great explanation John .. Appears to also have an Albumen emulsion given the aging characteristics ..

Thank you for your share John .. Best conservation archive might be photographing and an artist interpretive painting. Beautiful persona remains ..

Wow !  this is the first time I have seen this type of Photography.  I love it John, that you call it photography of the iron age.

Thank you for sharing this charming photo.  It appears the person on the far left is wearing a dress made from the same material as the little girl. Is that a wood burning stove on the far right?  Thank you for sharing this photo; it is very special.

Yes, I saw the two barely visible subjects at left; the man standing behind a seated women and you are right about there being a wood stove at right. Searching for the names for the others now.
