Robert and John Downing were convicted at Tralee Co Kerry Ireland Mar 1830 for stealing money and given 7years transportation to Sydney Aust.. They are the sons of Bartholomew and Bridget (Burns) Downing. There is also another son Bartholomew b around 1819. Robert was 17 and John 18 on conviction so born around 1812 and 1811 abt.Robert married Margaret Quilty and produced 15 children living at Tumut NSW whilst John married Bridget Reynolds and produced 11 children whilst working on proerties around Gundagai, Yass, Wagga Wagga area. John died 17th Apr1875(aged 65yrs) at Robert's property "Rosebank" near Tumut and is buried at Tumut old pioneer cemetery in the Downing memorial grave. Robert died 13th Oct1891(aged 80yrs) and brother Bartholomew died 1885(aged66yrs) and are buried in the same plot.
I descend from John Downing who went by the name of Downey when he married and had his family, it was later changed to Downie when my grgrandfather Michael A Downey married Emily Whitmore in Nth willoughby in July 1890.
