Proposal: Occupation Sticker

Basis of Change:
Based on a previous conversation in G2G, I am formally proposing a new sticker for Occupations, and a modification to the Religion sticker documentation.

As pointed out by Chris, Help:Stickers indicates that one of the style rules is "The name of the Sticker template should clearly communicate what it is used for." The Religion sticker's setup and usage has been in place since 2014; however, the style rules for Stickers were reviewed and approved last year and this sticker has not been changed to conform to this new style rule/policy.

Proposal:

  1. The Occupation sticker would be used to "notate a person's occupation (career, profession or organizational affiliation) that was either important to them, or may have been a distinguishing feature about their life."
  2. The Religion sticker documentation would be changed from "notation for a person's religion, profession, organizational affiliations that were important to them" to "notation for a person's religion, religious profession, or religious affiliations that were important to them".

One suggested change to the wording: "notate" isn't actually a word. It's a back-formation from "notation". The correct verb in this case would be "note".

You will often see people misusing similar words, like saying "orientated" instead of "oriented".

You will often see people misusing similar words, like saying "orientated" instead of "oriented".

You mean as (probably) those same people use "coronate" instead of "crown" and "conversate" instead of "converse"? /pedant  smiley

Pedantics aside, how do you feel about using an occupation sticker?
For me .. I'd use it.  :)

I have to admit my ignorance, though.  I have no idea what the "Occupation</nowiki>" on the examples means. blush

When we use <wiki> </nowiki> the wiki markup will be ignored so it can be displayed.

Forex: if we wanted to demonstrate what to add as a parent to a category, we'd use <wiki>[[Category:XXYY, ZZZ]]</nowiki> so you can see how it's typed in. If we didn't use the <wiki></nowiki>, the category link would display and you would not see the wiki coding.

But, but, but .. the first example doesn't use it; just the next three.  (I think that's why I was wondering if it meant something more.)

Oh he just forgot to add one ...I fixed it.
Merci.  Danke.  Gracias. (That's about my limit!)
Greg, grammar is not my forte. Simple fix tgough (when I get back to my PC).
Personally, I would not put occupation stickers on the profiles I manage, but I have no objection to other people putting them on profiles they manage if they so desire. (I suppose there's a possibility of friction when seven people co-manage the profile of a common ancestor, and three of them love stickers, three of them hate stickers, and the last one doesn't even know what stickers are.)

Greg, I know that there is a love/hate relationship on stickers, which is why there is a rule on adding and removing stickers on a profile.

In this proposal, there is actually a second component as well, which is correcting the use of an existing sticker to follow the current policy as updated last year (as explained in Chris' comment in the G2G thread provided).

I think it is important to use an Occupation Sticker when we know a persons occupation.

That is a big improvement! I know I'll use the new sticker.

Could you expound on what is covered by organizational affiliation, Steven? Do you mean only those which are occupation/profession/business-related affiliations, or do you mean to include any type (school, volunteer, hobby, etc.)?

My presumption is that the latter type should have a separate sticker (if not more!). But I could be overthinking the issue!devil

I would think it be more "professional affiliated", like a Union, Committee, Society, etc.
Thanks for the clarification, Steven!

I totally agree with this proposal. I have avoided using the Religion sticker for occupations because it just didn't feel right. Although I have known some people whose occupation was like a religion!

Yes I see you have created an occupation sticker for nurses. I would like to know if their is a sticker for those that build roads. My father was a finish grader operator that build a majority of the Interstate 5 in Oregon.

Alice - different occupations are not all separate stickers.  They all use the {{Occupation template; and you supply the image.  If you're unsure about it, I can try to find, or create, an image for you to use in the template.
Melanie thank you. I found this code for the occupation and changed the text already as you will see.

{{Occupation

|image=

|text=was a Finish Grader Operator in Oregon.

}}

I have the correct image to use for it and actually added it to his photos.  But I can't seem to find how to specifically add the image.

So if you can help with with it I would appreciate it greatly.

In the template, where it says "|image=", just add the image name and type -- example (as seen on this profile) :

{{Occupation|image=ADWP-961.png|text=worked as a Hairdresser}}

Your image name and type is -- Stephens-3935.png

Hey, Alice .. I took another look at the image you uploaded, and it is very possible it is not in the public domain, or creative commons, since it came from Pinterest.

If you wanted a photo for your dad's profile, you're more than welcome to use this one in the biography (or I can add his profile to the image, so it replaces the Pinterest upload).

{{Image|file=ADWP-963.png
|align=l
|size=250
|caption='''Caterpillar Road Grader.'''
|label=Caterpillar Road Grader.
}}

In addition to the above photo (from Wikimedia Commons), I have created another grader image, if you'd like to check out how it looks in a sticker.

{{Occupation|image=ADWP-964.png|text=was a grader operator.}}

Melanie I will check them both out.
