'ms till in search of the parents of May/Mae Lang, who married Lyle Nathan Paine in 1914 in Buffalo, New York.

Subsequent research has indicated her actual first name is Lillian with a middle name of May/Mae, though she seemed to mostly go by May/Mae at points in her life. On her son Raymond Lyle Paine's WWII draft card, her name is noted as Lillian M. Paine. I also found her death record there under that name, though she was buried with her husband in Florida. (She had moved in with her son after her husband died and her son Raymond lived in California.)

Regarding her parents:

- Her mother's name is up in the air. Transcriptions have noted it as Lucy or "Susian".

- I do know she was born between 1867-1870 in Canada.

- Father's name is not known. Does not appear in 1892 NY or 1900 US Census with his wife/children.

***TRANSCRIPTION HELP**

In the New York State Census f 1892, Lillian/May's mother is noted as "Susian Lang", B 1870 in Canada. Living in East Hamburg, Eerie County, New York.

Can anyone confirm this transcription with the original image? The spelling seems odd and it seems as though it may definitly be an error considering her name is also noted as Lucy in the next Census.

(I am blind IRL and can't confirm with the actual image.)

The transcription is correct, but that doesn't mean the spelling is.

Thanks for the confirmation!

I will continued to be baffled at what her actual name was. I suppose Susian could be "Susan". But it doesn't explain the 1900 Census naming her Lucy (which, I suppose, could be mistaken for Susy/Suzy.)

The more puzzling thing is where the father is.

Parents may be Benjamin Lang b. ca. 1864, Buffalo, NY and Susanna (Susie) Barnhart b. ca. 1869 Bethel?, Ontario, Canada. They were married in Welland, Ontario on 7 Nov 1886.

There is an additional Canadian marriage record for a William Lang of the right age to be May's brother with these two listed as parents.

Wow - that sounds very very promising, actually! Welland is not far across the border from Buffalo, I don't think, so would make sense.

And the transcription of the 1900 Census must be incorrect - must be Suzy/Susie instead of Lucy, if that's the case.

Thanks! A lot further along than I was before. I can always proceed with these as the presumed parents and put Uncertain for the relationship, thoug this seems promising.
