Inactive Members on WikiTree

Inactive members whom have strict control on their own and/or their ancestors profiles that they managed "block" others from connecting them to the tree. With new privacy settings this can be accomplished with everyone's best intentions; however, by being inactive it leads to frustration.

I understand the policy concerning "Living" members very well, but in some cases, these profiles aren't listed as living; the trusted list block other wikitreers from merging duplicates and in some cases connecting them to the tree in general.

I have reached out to a few individuals, that at one point were active on WikiTree and have control of their own profiles, about connecting their profile to the family tree (e.g. parent's that are already created). In my messages I have expressed that I would like to be added to the trusted list or if they prefer they can make the connection themselves and maintain strict private policy control.

This has helped in a few cases; however, there are former users that for whatever reason over the past year or so have not gotten back to me or it seems to have made any edits to the tree and perhaps haven't even logged in for several years.

While not a problem in the near term, these small issues could become quite the nuisance as time goes on.

What is the best way to handle a situation like this?

Here is a specific example:

I contacted this user initially to get them involved in WikiTree. They accepted. Modified their profile and then logged in once since the past 2 years. I have since this time found a NC Birth Index record to connect them to their father whom already has a profile.

I messaged them several times over the last year to ask for access or for them to add the profile to their profile themselves and update the privacy settings.

I suspect that either they are no longer active and may not be interested in returning to the site for untold reasons.

What the new privacy restrictions confirm is that WikiTree is NOT primarily about living people.  We want living people to join WikiTree and become active as genealogists, but if they are simply profiles, we hide them.

Therefore I can understand that you have found important information that should be on your relative's profile and link your relative to his father -- but I think WE NOW HAVE TO SIMPLY LET THAT GO.  Genealogy of living persons who are not WikiTree genealogists is something for future genealogists to deal with after these living persons become dead!

Hi Stormy,

Wikitree has a specific procedure that deals with Unresponsive Profile Managers. Even if they have not been active for a year or more, they still need to have the respect of being contacted, which is why this procedure is in place.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Unresponsive_Profile_Managers

That help page will guide you through what needs to be done and how, and will explain what happens. :)
