Brick Wall: Doris (Moore) Hughes

+2 votes
A month or two ago, I posted here asking for help finding information on my mother-in-law, Doris Marie (Moore) Hughes. Several people offered some clues. I followed up on them, but didn't find any more information. One person found a baptism record for a Doris Marie Moore, but when I followed up on it, I found that person died at 11 months old. So not the Doris I was looking for.

I've looked on Ancestry and FamilySearch and found nothing (birth, marriage, divorce, death), except for my husband's baptism and his brother's baptism.

One problem is that I don't know when she married my father-in-law. He was born in New Jersey and I believe she was born in Pennsylvania. But my husband was born in South Carolina, where his father was stationed at the time. Doris and George,Sr were not married at the time of the 1940 census.

On my husband's birth certificate, it is noted that she had "been keeping house" for 1 year and 4 months, so I assume that they married then (14 months prior to May 1943).

To further complicate things, I know that George, Sr and Doris split some time between 1955-1960. I don't know if they ever divorced.

Where do I go from here?

Susan,I need a lot of Info.  Your husband date birth and where,Same on

his Father george. Was George in Army,AirForce, his serial number.
Thanks Wayne. I think most of it is on their profiles, but I will PM you the information.

"My husband never knew any of the information, like her birth date, date of marriage, date of death"

Your husband should be entitled to seeing her Death Certificate, if you can locate where/when she died.

Where have you looked for info related to her death?  SSDI, which is available on ancestry might provide a clue.  Does your husband have (known) siblings?  How about their birth certs?

And how do you know when she died?

My husband passed in July. He had no contact with his parents after 1960. So he did not know where or when she died. I've looked on Ancestry and Family Search. There are lots of Doris Hughes's on the SSDI. Since George, Sr and Doris split around 1960, I don't know if they divorced. So she may have re-married.

My husband had a much younger brother, Richard, but he also had no contact with parents after about 1960 (for Mom) and 1964 (for Dad). I have lost touch with him, but I know he doesn't have any information.

Edited to add that I have found lots of information on George, Sr.
brother-in-law's Birth Cert would tell you again name, age, POB of parents. Just for confirmation.  Do you know where he was born?

It seems likely that they married around 1943, perhaps a year earlier.  Do you know where George was stationed?  The record that I linked just seemed to indicate it was stateside.  Where was your husband born?

It might be possible to find a wedding announcement, but I don't have a sub to newspaper archives.

Edited. George, Sr. was stationed at Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC (which was where my husband, George, Jr, was born), but he was in the Army Air Corps. George, Sr's wikitree id is Hughes-13907.

My husband's brother, Richard, was born 28 Dec 1954.

Thanks S. Brooks. I did see that Ancestry file.
Hi Susan,

I understand the frustration (break wall) when searching the elusive Hughes families. I, too, have Hughes ancestors and have struggled to find some kind of information and just when I think I've found a nibble that might lead me down the right path, I come up with yet another dead end. But, I'm still looking and if I come across your Hughes line, I'll let you know.

Oh, BTW, my great grandmother (maternal side) was a Hughes and her family ties were also from Pennsylvania, among other places. So, maybe we have a connection and don't know it yet. Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Thanks! This might be her. I'll check this out.

I just found the obituary for Clarence and it lists his daughter as "Doris Marjorie Maynard". So this is probably not Doris Marie.

"United States, GenealogyBank Obituaries, 1980-2014," database with images, FamilySearch ( : accessed 16 December 2018), Clarence Moore in entry for Doris Marjorie Maynard, Pennsylvania, United States, 16 Mar 2006; from "Recent Newspaper Obituaries (1977 - Today)," database, ( : 2014); citing Erie Times-News, born-digital text.
