Edward III Project: Gateway Ancestors - do you have one? (Round 2)

+45 votes
9.3k views

This is round two of an old G2G question.  Round one is here.  The idea here is to find new gateway ancestors.  If your ancestor already appears on the list below there is no need post the line.

Below is a list of 17th century new world immigrants with a recognized descent from Edward III, king of England. The list was kindly provided by Douglas Richardson, author of the Royal Ancestry series.  Links to all of them can be found on this page.

This list currently is 70 individuals representing 55 different families. Of the 70 individuals, 32 settled in the Southern Colonies, 27 in the New England Colonies, and 11 were part of the Quaker migration to the Middle Colonies.

Use the Relationship Finder to find if you have a connection to Edward III, king of England (Plantagenet-70). Does your gateway ancestor appear below?  If not, we will work to prove or disprove your connection.

Do you have a gateway ancestor from a population group other than American colonial immigrants (e.g. Australian, South African, European, etc.)? Post them here or in a separate G2G post and we will create new categories and new lists to track them. The line must be very well documented.

The List of 17th Century New World Immigrants

Joe, I was able to break the line myself, BUT, how to keep it that way? There’s already a ===Disputed Origins=== section there for him.

- Nancy
Thanks Nancy. I will have the Southern Colonies project add project protection to the profile.

Margaret Toshach is being accepted as one of the very additions to the ancestors of Ed. III list.

I am a Lowe and was wondering if we are related. Edward 111 is my 19th great grandfather.

Nancy Lowe Sitlar
Appears we are 6th cousins 1x removed.
THAT IS AWESOME. HELLO COUSIN!!
can someone check mine Craven-3277. it shows Edward III is my 20th gif but it won’t let me post it here because it’s too long.

Thanks!

Sheryl, I posted your line in round 3 of this question.

Your line runs through Jane Deighton, one of the relatively few immigrants with a proven ancestry to Edward III.

The line is good, at least starting from Jane on.  I will leave it to you confirm the rest of the American ancestry.

Thank you so much Joe! This was fun and interesting and I truly appreciate all you have done. It wasn’t easy answering all these requests. We kept you really busy and you went above and beyond! You are awesome!

Okay, I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly or not, but below is my relationship with Edward III.  Bare in mind, that there is dispute past #10 in my line.  We Vernons are still working to find documented evidence that James Vernon was the father of the 3 brothers who came to America with William Penn etc.

Edward III (Plantagenet) of England and C. (Vernon) Verworn are both descendants of Aubri I (Dammartin) de Dammartin.

1. Edward III is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1284-1327) [unknown confidence]
2. Edward II is the son of Leonor (Castilla) of Castile (abt.1241-1290) [unknown confidence]
3. Eleanor is the daughter of Jeanne (Dammartin) de Dammartin (1216-1279) [unknown confidence]
4. Juana is the daughter of Simon (Dammartin) de Dammartin (abt.1180-1239) [unknown confidence]
5. Simon II is the son of Alberic (Dammartin) de Dammartin (abt.1138-1200) [unknown confidence]
6. Aubri II is the son of Alberic (Dammartin) de Dammartin (abt.1102-abt.1183) [unknown confidence]
This makes Aubri I the fourth great grandfather of Edward III.

This line breaks in two places. Elizabeth Ramsay is not known to be the daughter of Richard Ramsay - it is a complete guess.

Richard Ramsay cannot be the son of Agnes Stewart. Agnes's mother died in 1486, and her father in 1499. Agnes married as her 4th husband Cuthbert Ramsay between 1546-1549. Agnes was at least 60 years old when she married Cuthbert and probably older.  I believe this is a misreading of The Scots Peerage, which states Cuthbert married Agnes and separately states he had a son Richard. The assumption made was that Richard was a son of Agnes - he must be the son of an earlier unknown wife.

I see you've disconnected Richard from Agnes.  Thanks!

Here's another one.  No sources provided to show that Thomas (born and died in Virginia) is the son of William (born and died in England), so color me skeptical.

Man I hate Virginia genealogy.  I agree, ,there is no reason to think Thomas Brereton is the son of William Brereton.  Now to find some sources to prove it.

This is a very interesting case which I think is correct but is not accepted by the powers that be in medieval genealogy.

The question is at generation 16, did John Weston really marry a daughter of the Earl of Westmore.

My 3rd great grandfather Gordon Mainwaring https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mainwaring-413  arrived in South Australia in 1840. This line is very poorly documented in WikiTree between generations 4 and 13, and there are numerous red flags. There are multiple people with middle names in a time period when no one had middle names. There are three generations in a row which supposedly were born in Ireland then immigrated to the US. Birth places jump back and forth between Ireland and Scotland. We need to properly document and source every generation.

We quickly run into trouble though. Patrick Gray and Mary Stewart did not have a daughter Lydia Ann Gray.

Andrew Gray, 2nd Lord Gray did not marry anyone named Lydia Ann Gray.

This line will take a lot of work to prove.
Hi Joe,

Thank you so much for responding. I've spent quite a few hours today trying to find out who Lydia Ann Gray is related to and everything I find leads back to Patrick Gray and Mary Stewart. I can not find a single record for her anywhere?!?!?

Who is this mystery woman who has who has been tied to royalty???

This is one of my favorite lines, and one which I personally believe but is not accepted by Doug Richardson. The only weak link is, is Cecilia (Neville-1904) Weston the daughter of Ralph Neville-15?

Is there any evidence as to the immigrants parents?

John Caldwell (d. 1639) did not have a son William.
The profile for John (1603-1639) says he had a son William who married Elizabeth Huston, and cites baptism records I can't see.  But I see no evidence on immigrant John Caldwell's (1650-1717) profile that his parents are William and Elizabeth.
See the funeral entry at the bottom of the page for John (1603-1639) in which his marriages and children were testified to by "John Coldwell Sonn and Heire and Mary Relict of the Said Defunct".  There is no William.  Even if there is a baptism for a William, he certainly died as an infant.
Ah, got it.  So at least one break in the line, then.  Probably two.
I have disconnected William Caldwell from his incorrect parents John Caldwell and Mary Sweetenham.

Edward III is my 19th Greatgrandfather
by Kern Brogan G2G6 Mach 1 (14.7k points)

The question is how? And is it proven?

Your gateway ancestor John Douglas who is not accepted as a gateway ancestor.  What is the proof that he is the son of Robert Douglas?

11. John is the son of John Douglass Gent. (1636-1678)
12. John is the son of Robert Douglas (abt.1593-bef.1669)
13. Robert is the son of Grizel (Henderson) Douglas (abt.1567-abt.1618)
14. Grizel is the daughter of Jonette (Murray) Henderson (1541-1571)
15. Jonette is the daughter of William of Tullibardine Murray (abt.1495-1562)
16. William is the son of Margaret (Stewart) Murray (1487-1524)
17. Margaret is the daughter of John (Stewart) Stewart of Balveny First Earl of Atholl (abt.1440-1512)
18. John is the son of Joan (Beaufort) Queen Dowager of Scots (abt.1402-abt.1445)
19. Joan is the daughter of John Beaufort KG (abt.1371-1410)
20. John is the son of John (Plantagenet) of Gaunt KG (abt.1340-1399)
21. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

According to The Douglas Archives the ancestry of the immigrant is speculative and unproven.

The line was questioned by Dr. Neil D. Thompson:

Thompson, Neil D. "The Douglass Family of Charles County, Maryland," in The American Genealogist, Vol. 49, No. 4 (Oct. 1973):193-202; Vol. 50, No. 1 (Jan. 1974):45-51.

Thompson, Neil D. "The Douglass Family of Charles County, Maryland: Some Further Observations," in The American Genealogist, Vol. 53, No. 2 (Apr. 1977):76-78.

Thank you

I have six lines to him, either 21st or 22nd GGF, all through three immigrants:

Elizabeth Cooke (already posted, hers is the line through the disputed Cecily Neville.)

Evan Shelby (I know my line to him is wrong, but other family members are clinging to it. not sure about his line to Edward III.)

and Thomas Wingfield (I like this line best, but we'll see.)

I'll post them all separately. (to be continued...)

Curious one.  This line appears Douglas Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry (2004): page 770; however, it is removed from his Royal Ancestry (2013): vol. IV page 620. This usually means that the line has been disproved, but I can find no hints anywhere that the line has been broken. Still looking.
