I can't locate the births of my GGGrandParents, parents of Charles William Gilham B: approx 1856, Lambeth Surrey, UK

My GGParents were Charles William Gillham (basketmaker, B: maybe 1856 Lambeth, Surrey, UK) & Alice Elizabeth Wheeler (B:Feb 3, 1858 Lambeth, Surrey, UK) who were married on Mar 21, 1878 in St. Phillips, Lambeth.

Charles William Gillham's profile is here... http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gillham-28

According to marriage cert, father of CW Gilham B: ~1856, was another Charles William Gillham (builder, deceased) and it appears that his mother was also deceased as at time of marriage (& 1871 census prior) he was living with James Gillham (B: 1827 relationship unknown) and his wife Emma Louisa Hill (B: 1831) at 40 George Street, Lambeth.  Emma Louisa Gillham is a witness at the marriage of Charles William Gillham & Alice Elizabeth Wheeler.  At the prior census 1861, Charles William jnr was not with James & Emma so I presume that he must be with parents or at least with widowed mother but to date I have been unable to find him?

To complicate life there are a lot of Gillham/Gillam/Gilham s in Lambeth and quite a lot of them are basketmakers !  I've been struggling with this for a few years now.

The only Charles Gilham of the right age living with a widow in 1861 appears to be at Church Street, Chelmsford (Mary Gilham) but this doesn't match the reported birth location.  All other Charles of the right age are at home with father's called William who are alive and kicking.

Any help or off-the-wall ideas gratefully accepted.

Cheers

Have you seen William Gilham b. about 1822 living in Lambeth with wife Caroline. They have a son William born about 1851. Can let you have copy of census return for 1861if you would like to see more details.

Thanks for response John.

This is a possible father / mother but no more than many others :(

I do have access to the UK 1841-1911 censuses but thanks for the offer.

The birth of a Charles Gillham was registered in Lambeth in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1857 (vol 1d page 314). If you have not already done so I'd suggest ordering the birth certificate for this entry. There's also a baptism of a Charles Gillham in Lambeth in May 1871 where the actual birth is noted as 1852 - parents William and Esther.

Hope that helps

Thanks Julia.

The C W Gillham Bn: 21 July 1857 is the most likely birth but the father on the cert is a William (Cabinetmaker), where as CW when he marries reports his father as Charles William Gillham (Builder deceased).

Yes the CW Gillham Bn:1852 Bap:1871 married Matilda Sophia GURL in Q1 1878, I have traced this line from 1790's to 1920's without a proven connection to 'my' CW Gillham  :(
