This is for those of us Kiwis or who are in New Zealand who have signed up for the Scan-a-thon to be held in January 2019

So far - I think - there are 3 people interested.

Myself, Lianne Trevarthen and Andrew Redepenning.

If I have missed anyone, please let me know.

I dont plan on using the Kiwi Crew page for this. We can add everything to this thread that is necessary to know.

I'm not going to make this a competition. We just want to have fun, scan photos and add to our profiles. This is an Unofficial Kiwi Crew activity.

Cheers

Do we upload scans of birth certificates?
by Andrew Redepenning G2G Crew (920 points)
If the person concerned has passed, I would say YES, but if they are still living then I would say NO.

But then again, I am not sure if there is any Wikitree policy on this.

Does any Leader want to comment?

Usually under copyright laws, you can't - but don't our birth certificates belong to us and not to the state?
Only Open and Public profiles count, so they'd have to be deceased. Otherwise, yes, primary sources like that absolutely count.
Thanks Abby!!!

Looking through some SD camera cards and I discovered a whole lot of Gravestone pictures that I must have taken at some stage yet not done anything with.

As they are my original photos they do count which is great as I thought I would only have limited photos to scan.
by Darren Kellett G2G6 Pilot (430k points)
Excellent Darren, well done.

Also Welcome to a new Team Member - Arthur Buckland Pinnock.

The Scan-a-thon has now BEGUN!!!

Please SCAN AWAY!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Duh! I put aside the three days to photograph all the headstones at the Waiuku Cemetery and upload them to Freespace for future action.

Then I discovered that Lianne had already posted a similar page that was ,as yet, incomplete.

An email to Lianne for permission to upload to her page has yet to be answered. Lianne...?

Anyway 6 hours of taking pics so far and about 12% done. Battery flat on all camera's etc etc. The sun is too hot midday, ( 30 degrees ! ) and the angle means that I have to chop and change which headstones can be shot.. Slow process as flowers/memorabilia etc have to be moved and then replaced for a clear shot. 3 days may not be enough. Need to map out and record which areas have been done to avoid duplicates.

Should have started sooner in the picture taking and spent the 3 days just uploading Duh! again.
Good to hear from you Arthur.

Sorry you are having trouble. But just do your best, and we will all appreciate it later.
Day 1 over and bad light stopped play. Plus the cemetery was closed at 8:30 pm and I was kicked out. 25% coverd, - 831 images. Now the hard part starts. How to link my cellphone to the laptop OR upload to Google Drive which is automatic and then start labelling , which is required, before uploading to Wikitree.  All good fun and a learning experience. Especially the mosquitoes when doing an evening shoot.
Great work Arthur.

It is a bugger that the Waikau Cemetery Free Space page is on a Public privacy which means you can't upload without being on the trusted list.

Have you thought of making a Waikau Cemetery Visit Free space page which could have the photos uploaded to there. Also there may still be a limit of 10 photos per free space page which would mean most of your photos won't be counted even though they are uploaded.

I have been just adding new profiles then will add to the Sydenham cemetery free space page and category next week.

Great to see a new face in the Thon's
Oh and check out the page at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Zealand_Cemeteries_Team_Progress to see what cemetery's need photos and profiles if you are interested. We at New Zealand Cemeteries Team always want more help as there is quite a bit to do.
WOW Darren. I had no idea how much you guys have done for the NZ Cemeteries Project. I see that I will have to add some new categories to some of my relatives profiles!!

But that can wait until later.

Thanks for the heads up!!
Thanks Darren. I created a public Freespace Scanathon Waiuku Cemetery page to upload pics, - 60 out of 1200 so far but it is taking forever, one by one. Worked through the night and it is now causing strife with the wife, so I had better scale it down a bit. Technical problems re my Samsung Galaxy 6 phone cannot connect to the laptop means that I have to upload to One Drive, then download to my laptop, correct the orientation and only then upload to the Wiki freespace page. Any advice greatfully accepted!

Talk about fools rushing in !!!!!!

cheers Arthur B-P

Waiuku NZ
Yup. BTDT. Have emailed Lianne re joining.
Yeah Me and Lianne are trying to have categories and free space profiles for all the cemeteries in New Zealand.

I think most of the Free Space pages I have created are open so anyone can add to them.
Sorry for that Art, I have a bunch of Waiuku photos I was uploading and working on the table at the same time But things have changed with cemetery project, and they no longer want the photos of headstones on the cemetery pages, just on the profiles, and no table.

I haven't been on G2G much and was out a lot of yesterday, so sorry for the delay. Glad you got them uploaded somewhere anyway.

I thought we could only have 5 photos counted if they were to a free-space page only, but if they are attached to a profile they will be counted for that.
I will need to add the category for most of the profiles I have worked on this weekend. Probably 250 profiles will need more sourcing and categorizing. I will have to check with Stephen King if he is all good with me adding all the profiles to the Free Space Page he has for Sydenham Cemetery.
Arthur, please keep going for asl long as you can. We have just over 24 hours left and you have put the Kiwi crew into SECOND place on the Tracker!!!

Just keep going everyone.

If I find any more photos I will upload, but I dont have too many more useful ones.

I have done a few to start off with. But I am crashing and I really need to get some sleep. I will be back in a few hours - probably around 4 pm EST - or 10 AM NZT.

Ciao.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
OK its just gone 4 pm, done the family chat and I am now back and rearing to go to find more pics, photos and documents to upload!!

Thanks to Lianne and Darren for uploading whatever pics they have.

It's after midnight here in the EST and I have run out of photos to scan from MY family.

So I will take a break and maybe do my husbands family in the morning. I have lots of photos from his family - but they are Canadians. Still I will do them so they can add to the NZ total!! laugh

Darren, thank you for all the cemetery photoas you are uploading. Please continue to do so - but not so fast that you are not having any fun. Thanks.

Same goes for Arthur. If you can upload whatever you can when you can. Every little but helps.

Cheers

Robynne

Well I have had 4 hours of sleep and and am up to start a new day so lets see how many photos from my canadian husbands family that I can find to help the NZ total, shall we?
Ugh I couldnt find much from the hubbys family because of the ones I have, many of the people in them are still living, and others have no names at all.

I wandered off to have another nap and ended up sleeping for 4 hours, so hopefully I can stay up for the next 8 to 12 hours.

Huge thank you to Darren and Arthur for uploading SO MANY photos!!
GO KIWI!

Now in 11th place with 352 scans counted.

Good one!
Sunday 4 PM NZT - NZ in 10th place with 407 photos uploaded. Way to go Kiwis. I'm only sorry I cannot contribute more!!
To put it Bluntly

Who cares you only did 1 or 1,000? It is the participation that counts.

I am Kid free this weekend as they are with their mum and I had some Photos that I really should have uploaded a while ago, (Taken November 2017) so I have gotten to 3rd place overall with 248 at 6:41pm 13th January. It is only cause I have the time to do them.

Andrew has some great Family photos, Robynne has some great Family photos, Lianne and Arthur are doing cemetery photos .

It is all appreciated.
Hear hear! I am in it for the fun and the learning experience myself. And there have been a few Aha! moments and quite a few emotional occasions. I did not realise how old I am getting, seeing all the headstones of old friends acquiantances and past students.. This was offset by stepping on a 1950's concrete slab covered tomb to get closer to the headstone for a better shot, - and going through!  6 foot hole underneath but I managed to hang in there OK.. Then my phone battery went dead , ( scuse the pun ) for the third time today so I decided to call it quits and go. home for breakkie. 7 pm.
OMG Arthur, I do hope you are OK.

Ok I will stop with the comparisons.

Thanks Guys.

Darren thank you for all the photos you are uploading.
I am out of the Cemetery photos. Have a few family photos that need to be scanned and about 20 certificates that can be scanned. Then I will be out of things to do. Might have to do a cemetery visit depending on how I feel.
He Arthur You will be in First place f you don't stop soon. You are about 60 scans behind Jody Rodgers and will pass me very quickly as I have stopped for the night.
Har har! The cook is on night shift so I can carry on.

Have 2k images to upload but at the rate I am going, the Scanathon will be over before I can finish;

Need to find a way to batch load instead of this upload to Drive, download to laptop, upload to Wiki, one pic at a time. It is taking forever.

Have sent you a message on your profile site.

cheers,

Arthur
Wow. I just had three rows for Sydenham Cemetery and that took me most of two days to do some rough profiles. You have taken on a big task.

It doesn't matter if you don't finish it by 2am Tuesday which is the end of the Scan-A-Thon just as long as you keep working with what you have.
Yup I know the end time but I am supposed to be felling trees Monday which will hold me back a bit. Not safe to go on the internet when chopping down trees! :-))))

I set myself the task of photographing every headstone and plaque in the Waiuku cemetery over the 72 hour Scanathon. Just another 12% to do at daylight tomorrow and I will have completed the task. The holdup is the internet upload/download bit. I have learnt so much this week end and enjoyed every minute.

Looking at the idea of renting out the house for a couple of years, buying a campervan and cruising NZ photographing all the cemeteries. Looking for a new project and this one  sounds good to me.
2 am and have just uploaded my mothers and my eldest son;s headstone to freespace. Can't see the keyboard so going to call it a day. And what a day it has been! Marvellous.
Thank you for all your hard work Arthur. The bigwigs are very impressed with your work. By bigwigs, I mean Eowyn and Susie - you just need to look at the hang out videos for Sunday to see just how impressed they are.

I too have been up all night as well. I may need to go take a few hours of sleep and then come back for the final push. I am really dredging up the bowels of my shelves to find all the old photos.

It is 9 AM Eastern time and we have just on 23 hours left to go.

We have all done very well for the first 2 days!!

Go Kiwi Crew!!
Thanks Robynne. No time for videos. Back at work here so will have to call it a day for now. Having a problem with doubling up a picture anyway. Lost track of where I was at. Raining for the first time in weeks. Hooray!

Thank you to Arthur, Darren and Lianne for all the cemetery photos they uploaded

Thank you also to Darren for attending most of the chats towards the end. That was wonderful!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I can't seem to get back to sleep.
Whew, its not just me!!

I really need to catch up on my sleep but I can't....

Too tired to read but not tired enough to sleep

Drats!!
Right after I wrote the above, I went to bed and slept for 6 hours!!  LOL

All caught up now.
Thank you Kiwi Crew for the opportunity to have a ball this week end!

I learnt a heck of a lot about local history, met some fabulous people,  accomplished a personal goal and had some very emotional and exciting moments. All in a 72 hour period. You cannot buy this sort of thing anywhere.

So thank you, thank you thank you!

Arthur
So glad you had enjoyed yourself and had fun, Arthur.
