This here is Team Tennessee Volunteers 2019 Scan - A - Thon G2g chat. To be able to chat on.

January 11-14, 2019, is our first annual Scan-a-Thon. Our mission: to scan and share all those old family photos and other items that have been piling up! !

In January we will have our first annual 72-hour scanning marathon, to parallel our fun and successful annual Source-a-Thons and Spring Clean-a-Thons.

Our mission: to scan and share all those old family photos and other items we've been meaning to get to!

The party starts Friday morning, January 11, at 8 AM (ET) and runs until Monday, January 14, at 8 AM (ET). (Eastern Standard Time is GMT -5.) We're encouraging genealogists from all over the world to participate at the same time.

Will you join us?

Here's the [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Scan-a-Thon#Participation Scan-a-Thon Help Page].

Here is the https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/736006/team-tennessee-volunteer-2019-scan-a-thon-g2g-chat.

==Participation==

Participation means uploading original images to WikiTree person profiles or free-space profiles.

If you don't have boxes of unscanned photos laying around (like some of us do!) you can still participate. Examples of other items that can be scanned and uploaded:
• Letters
• Postcards
• Ephemera
• Funeral Cards
• Primary Documents

If you don't have a scanner, there are apps like Genius Scan and JoyFlips that are free and function like a scanner. See Greg Slade's G2G post for more information.

===Only upload images once===

Images should only be uploaded once. If you have different resolutions of the same image, upload the higher-resolution version. However, note that images cannot be over 10MB. If there is more than one person in a photo, identify the additional people on the image edit page after uploading it.

For more info, see our our Photos FAQ.

 ===Only original images===

The challenge is limited to original images, i.e. images that you have scanned, photographed or otherwise obtained yourself. Images downloaded from other websites should not be counted.

This does mean that it will be harder to participate if you don't have photos and documents that need to be scanned. You might consider asking family members, contacting a local library or historical society, or coordinating with your team members to find other sources.

===Only 10 images per profile===

WikiTree isn't meant for storing large collections of family photos. If everyone scanned all their childhood photos and put them on WikiTree we couldn't remain a free website. Other websites are designed for photo storage. We are a genealogy website.

Therefore, we have made the rule that only the first 10 uploads to a profile count. That is, if you're uploading more than 10 photos of the same person, only the first 10 will count toward your Scan-a-Thon score.

===Only Public and Open profiles===

The only images that will count are those uploaded to Public and Open profiles. Private images will not be counted.

===Always respect copyrights===

See the Legal Genealogist's "Copyright and the old family photo." If you aren't sure if something counts post your question in this G2G thread [coming soon].

===Tracking===

Tracking and reporting will be done automatically.

===Badges===

Every registered participant will get a Scan-a-Thon badge.

The 10 participants who upload the most original images over the 72-hour period will get a Scan-a-Thon Winner badge, as will all the participants of the winning team. There are no prizes for winning — just the badge, bragging rights, and the community's appreciation.

We are also planning a Profile Sticker that you can put on your profile after the race is over to show number of images uploaded and your final position.

I have a couple of docs that are pdf format that I had pro scanned today. They are too large for a conventional machine and a very delicate. One is a whole Stars and Stripes Newspaper from May 1945, and some others are clippings with pics. Is there any (copyright) reason I shouldn't use these, and how will pdfs be counted?
Follow the link to copyright on photos and says that the copyright is for 70 years after the death of owner, if he didn't pass it on. You'll have to check with the newspaper since they probably hold the copyright. My guess is NO. Unfortunately. But check with the newspaper, they might say yes for this purpose. And then you will have to caveat the picture.
In this case, the publication was 1944 during WWII and includes a pic of my dad. As I look at the page, It falls under "Fair Use" copyright so, I'm clear.
Hi Lisa, I'm pretty sure that publishing an entire copy of a 1944 newspaper will not pass the "fair use" test, but that's just my opinion. If there is a particular article that is relevant to the profile, I would extract just that article. You can use a copy app such as the Windows "snipping tool" if you're using a Windows computer, or maybe you could snap a pic with your cell phone.

Also, I think all U.S. newspapers prior to 1923 are in the public domain, so everything older than that is safe to upload. I think Chronicling America images are also OK. If you obtained your articles by downloading from Newspapers.com or another pay site, it's probably illegal to upload those images for any reason, due to the fine print which was contractually agreed to. However the same article that you happen to have an original paper clipping of is probably OK.

It's complicated!! I believe what I've said here is correct, but it's possible I could be wrong and/or incomplete. This is what I'm going by.

Good luck!!
I think you're correct Joyce. I decided to just upload two small cut-outs with my dad in the photo. All of them were carried home with my dad from the war. No need to load the entire paper. I think I'll find out how I can donate the large, complete paper to the Stars and Stripes Museum in MO.
I'm sure they would love to hear from you!

Oh, this is making me go through all my folders (physical and electronic)  on family and extract photos and prepare them for uploading. There are sure a lot, so I will have to be careful with what I choose. What fun!

Hey hun,

Eowyn made a couple change. Richard Dalton and Steven Bohlen were changed over to Legacy Heirs. It was confirmed on our last team check and on the email to let everyone know the important information about today.

Sorry that I didn't do any yesterday but since Wednesday night I had developed bronchitis and sinus also again. It is worse then before New Years. I took the last antibiotic then on New Years Day. So this time my sister took me to the walk in clinic and he prescribed a stronger antibiotic, steroid and steroid shot yesterday, cough pills in form of pearls, and nasal spray. Since Friday I was cough all the time and blowing stuff out of nose all the time. I just didn't feel like participating but I am going to do it today up till 8:00 Monday if I feel like it. hopeful.

Sorry about that. I hope you are feeling better today.

I developed a really sore throat last night, but don't intend to do anything about it until tomorrow if I can avoid it.  I have found that my health goes downhill after all the A-thons I participate in. I just don't have any stamina at 75 years.

I think I'm finished.  I see the scans still aren't being tracked correctly.  Is that going to be fixed?
by Beverly Ahrens G2G6 Mach 8 (84.5k points)
I do not know when I try to get into the tracker it says can't reach the page every time I try so I do not know. Plus yesterday I didn't do any because  since Wednesday night I had developed bronchitis and sinus also again. I just didn't feel like participating but I am going to do it today up till 8:00 Monday if I feel like it. hopeful. Sorry about getting sick before and during this. But hopefully the clean - a - thon and source - a - thon will be better this year since I have gotten moved and by then I hope to not get sick before or during it. I will this year be a better team captain this coming  year.
Being sick hasn't stopped you from participating. You are still above the average.  My goal was 100. I wonder if I'll make it? Only if I  pull an all-nighter which will put me off schedule for about a week. No stamina. But I try.
