Are you Australian, either actually or emotionally? Do you have some family photos or documents you've been meaning to scan? We Want You for Team Australia's Scan-a-thon crew!

Please sign up by posting an answer on the Scan-a-thon registration thread and say that you'd like to be part of Team Australia, then upload your personal photos or documents (limit of 10/profile) over the weekend of the 11th-14th of January.

Our team page is here: Team Australia, which includes the current team list and start and end times for our timezones. A lot of us also use the Wikitree in Australia Facebook group, so there may be Scan-a-thon chat there too.

Sadly I have none to scan.
Well done on being up to date. :) I've found a fair bit of digitised stuff which I haven't loaded anywhere yet and it's a bit hard putting it off until the scan-a-thon starts.
ET is 16 hours behind us, so does that mean we aren't supposed to start until midnight tonight Sydney time?

Yes, 12:30 tonight for us. I've worked it out as:

Perth: 9:30pm Friday- 9:30pm Monday

Queensland: 11:30pm Friday - 11:30pm Monday

Adelaide: 12am Saturday - 12am Tuesday

NSW, ACT, & Victoria: 12:30am Saturday - 12:30am Tuesday

I'm with Anne Tichborne.  I don't really have anything I think it's safe to scan and upload*.  I have been adding cropped images of some scans, though.  Just not today. :) (All today have been crops from pdf files.)

.

.

* I do have some BDM certificates in my files, but have no idea what copyright allows me to upload.

I'm not sure with purchased certificates either - it's the sort of thing that I'd think about uploading to Ancestry (because they can afford the lawyers) but not somewhere like Wikitree.

UK certificates are OK: "As long as there are no details about living individuals there is no problem about publishing the images of the certificates on your family tree website. Any modern certificates would be subject to the Data Protection Act, and would need the permission of any living named person prior to publication." It says that you need permission to include the images in a publication, like a book or other document.

ScotlandsPeople seems OK as long as you aren't using a lot of the images, it says "Individuals and organisations can use up to a maximum of 20 (twenty) NRS Crown copyright images for the following purposes without the need to obtain specific written permission from NRS or pay a licence fee:

  • book, journal, magazine, newspaper, publication, broadcast
  • online use – limited to a maximum of 20 images per website
  • display/exhibition/talk/presentation

The material must be reproduced accurately, not be used in a misleading context and NRS must be acknowledged."

The Victorian BDM seems to say no, I can't find a clear statement on the NSW or Qld sites.

I sent an email to Qld BMD last night & received a reply this morning which stated: "Once you have received the information/ images they are yours to upload as you wish. We do ask that you consider the privacy of any living relatives but do not regulate what is done with the images we make available."

Regarding NSW, there is a link on the main BMD Search Page at the bottom to Copyright & Disclaimer

Trying to find relevant stuff isn't that hard for me I have boxes of it!   Are we counting anything or just uploading?
by Veronica Williams G2G6 Pilot (213k points)
The first 10 images you upload to a public profile will count towards your score - that's to stop indiscriminate uploads of less useful things, like a whole album of baby photos added to a private profile.

Apparently tracking will be done automatically, but there hasn't been any more info on how that happens. Also I'm not sure if it's going to be 10 total that the profile is linked to, including what's there already, or 10 added during the 'thon.

Nor'Easters stopping by to congratulate all those that participated in the SCAT. Many photos, documents, gravesites, etc have been added to profiles making them much more informative to view.
