Hi Maggie, Frank answered this in another question, hope he won’t mind me copying it to here

If you go to surnamedb.com  which is a free site, and type in Channon, it is called a West Country variant of the surname Cannon. There is a fair amount of additional information also.

Surnamedb.com also has Cannon, Based on the popularity ranking out of about 49000-50000 surnames, Cannon is 486th and Channon is 12,474th.

WikiTree's policy on naming is to use their convention not ours, and although that is difficult for pre-1700 profiles and doubly difficult for pre-1500 it shouldn't be a reason to abandon the naming policy without some attempt to find the most appropriate name for that time

I note that currently there are no sources on the profile for William or his wife, parent, grandparents etc. and that there is a merge that is over due but maybe a source or sources should be found first.  I'll see what I can find.

Thanks, John. The only thing that's similiar are the locations.
Sorry Maggie, I haven't discovered much, apart from it looks like the genealogy as currently on WikiTree for the Channon/Cannon family is a huge mess.  I'm fairly sure there is a mixture of several families with the same or similar surname but really have no connection with each other.

The later profiles from the Isle of Man do seem to use the surname Cannon with a few minor variations but I think the earlier ones as represented by William have no connection to the Isle of Man, but I haven't found anything at all to indicate they ever existed and the fact that they seem to originate from different parts of England would also suggest they are really different families.

The Cannon profiles that emigrate to the United States also look like they may have been erroneously connected to English families with no sources really indicating such a connection.
As I suspected, John. I will study them for awhile and also try to sever a couple of the obvious ones. I won't merge these Channon/Cannon profiles just yet.
Lots of Channons in the Ottery St Mary, Devon, England area.
Hi John, I saw your thread about Cannon undocumented connections across the pond.  I just posted a question on that topic re cannon-3847 and wondered whether you had found anything for that John Cannon.  Right now I am inclined to leave his birth "record" as is, but add a research note that there's no assurance that the marriage and death records belong to the same person (the marriage record is solid).

He is probably a hoax. Please study Anslow-4 and Anslow-47
