Any information on marriages after Nelson Carpenter's Death? [closed]

I'm seeing possible spouses for Amanda Danford after Nelson Carpenter's death in 1863 OR were there two Nelson Carpenters and their information is getting confused.

Sarah Martha "Sallie" Carpenter was my great-great grandmother and I have census reports showing Amanda Danford was her mother (listed as mother in law to her spouse, JH Weston, with children listed confirmed, in Barbour County, Alabama).

Thank you for any help or knowledge you have!

WikiTree profile: Amanda Carpenter
closed with the note: There’s no good answer except that she likely had the children out of wedlock and the younger children put her deceased husband as father.

If she got married again it would be Amanda Carpenter marrying xyz.

There are a lot of Amanda Carpenters that got married after 1863, would it have been in Alabama also?

Just gone back and looked at the census, it’s 1910 and she is still a Carpenter, so doesn’t look like the above is correct
I found two of her younger children with fathers listed on their marriage documents. Both men were brothers of Nelson, so I'm thinking that she was taken in by the brothers... She showed receiving a Confederate pension. I also read a story that it's possible that she never remarried due to the pension and continued good relations with the family. Man that makes genealogical research difficult!

Even then, there is a child born after 1863 who listed Nelson as his father on his marriage document. I'm guessing that's why you have to have a birth certificate these days to help with problems like this!

Okay, you have a serious problem right off the bat. A man who died in 1863 cannot possibly have fathered a child born in 1872. So either he is not her father or he did not die in 1863.

I know - that is my problem. All of the other family trees (Ancestry, family search) list Nelson Carpenter as her father but that cannot be the case. I thought that was what I was asking above. Thanks for trying to help though.

I also found this record;

U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007

Name: Dausie Emanuel Carpenter
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Date: 14 Nov 1895
Birth Place: Barbour CO, Alabama
Father: Nelson Carpenter
Mother: Amandia Danford
SSN: 258266659
Notes: Sep 1941: Name listed as DAUSIE EMANUEL CARPENTER

And then I found the following.

Alabama, Texas and Virginia, Confederate Pensions, 1884-1958

Name: Dausie Emanuel Carpenter
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Date: 14 Nov 1895
Birth Place: Barbour CO, Alabama
Father: Nelson Carpenter
Mother: Amandia Danford
SSN: 258266659
Notes: Sep 1941: Name listed as DAUSIE EMANUEL CARPENTER

And this:

Alabama, Texas and Virginia, Confederate Pensions, 1884-1958

Name: Nelson Carpenter
Application Date: 11 Jun 1891
Application Place: Barbour
Spouse: Amanda Carpenter
Pension File Number: 97
Application Type: Widow

I still don't know what to make of it - could Dausie have put the wrong father because he didn't know who his father was? Dausie was born after 1895, then Nelson couldn't have been the father. Unless there were two Nelson's and they've become muddled. Do we trust the record when it seems to conflict? Especially when there are tales of Amanda Carpenter not remarrying because of the pension money she was receiving from Nelson's death.

I think what you may have is a mother who had a number of children out of wedlock and named her deceased spouse as their father. The only way you may solve this puzzle is with DNA.

Here is Amanda in 1870 with two additional children but no spouse. Neither of these children could have belonged to Nelson.

I suppose it's an unresolvable end. I appreciate all your help. I think it's right for me to correct the trees that list children after Nelson's death as his children. Thanks again for being another set of eyes!
Deb, you have eagle eyes, well spotted!
