Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help.

Or if you just want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up.

Or if you even want to JOIN the Notables project and get a badge

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and noone can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they preferably should be DEAD!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2018

Above is a list of those who have passed in 2018

Happy New Year!!!!

OK Link to this thread from the Notables page has been updated for January. I will have to remember to update that link every month!!

I've been adding television hosts as notables, including:

Bill Cullen
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cullen-2341

Peter Tomarken
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tomarken-1

Garry Moore (profile was already there, added more info)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Morfit-16

Open for suggestions on others or willing to help on yours.
Hi Everybody,

I don't know if everybody knows who Alistair and Hetty Tayler are or were, but anyway, I checked and noticed that they were not here on wikitree, so I have added them, researched and connected and basically sorted their tree. They were Historical Writers, are on Wikipedia, and wrote The Book of the Duff's. I have done a bit of work on them, hope I've done the right thing and I wondered if I could get a critique from the group. Tayler-231 and Tayler-234.

I thought I had asked to join the group, but maybe I haven't. I added the tag but don't have a badge yet.

Thanks.
Hi, Could I be added to the Notables project? I'm interested in Notable Australians and Notable Women in History (possible new sub project).

Thanks!

Virginia
Certainly Virginia. I'll have Scott get you a badge...

Scott? Scott? yoohoo?? LOL
Hello Virginia - Welcome to the Notables Team!
Sorry David - just saw your post about the badge. It has now been awarded. Welcome to the Notables Team!
Mike - you might try looking at this list:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_game_show_hosts

I don't know how many of these have already been created, but it seems like a rather large list (330 when I pulled it up) of potential television personalities who have been game show hosts and it would be an interesting venture to create more of them and link them to the global tree.
Thanks Scott

Thanks for allowing me to add some notables that I have come across in my research.  I appreciate having the badge and being part of this project.  I will start by adding William Tyler Page a long time congressional page and author of the 'American Creed'.  Also will add to Notables two of the three Mormon witnesses to Joseph Smith's Golden Plates.

Pleading for someone or someones well-versed in Swedish and/or Syrian genealogy to help connect guitarist Tommy Bolin!

I've made good progress on Tom Evans (of the unspeakably tragic band Badfinger) but help would always be appreciated! He is not yet connected.

I was surprised to see that there were Chief Justices of the United States without profiles, so I created them for Morrison Waite, Melville Fuller, Harlan Stone, and William Rehnquist.  I'll see if I can find connection paths for them-certainly any assistance would be appreciated.  They all seem to have early American roots (Rehnquist through his maternal ancestry), so that should help.

by Greg Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (371k points)
William Rehnquist will show as connected once the system updates.

Louis Philippe de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil, second in command of the French Navy under Admiral de Grasse during the American Revolution, is now connected to the tree.

Author Romain Rolland will show as connected tomorrow, through his marriage to Marie Clotilde Bréal who later married pianist Alfred Cortot.

(I want more easy connections like this one).

Thanks for catching that one, not sure how I missed the connection.  In other news, François Christophe Kellermann, Marshal of France, will show as connected once the system updates.

Good news about Kellermann. I'm wondering how many of the First Empire marshalls we have now (those marshalls who are encircling Paris).

It looks like we have seven of them, although I'm being generous in counting the profile of François Joseph Lefebvre in the total.

It is a profile intended for Marshall Lefebvre, so it counts. I'll put creating a free-space page for those marshalls on my to-do list (not before the beginning of February), some of them have quite interesting connections.

I have finally finished updating the Free Space page for the Academy Award Winners with the film titles for each of the primary actor categories (Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress).

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Academy_Award_Winners

I'm now working to update all those who received Honorary awards as well, as I'm finding many actors/actresses in that group as well. As I'm adding them, I'm also trying to connect them to the global tree. It's a slow process, but I'm seeing progress. If anyone wants to help, feel free to jump in. Keep in mind the living winners will be a challenge, so try to focus on those who have passed away.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
In the column of "Real Name" of Karl Malden, there is a little mistake. You wrote the "Sukulovich", but it actually Sekulovich. And to be completely correct, his real name is Mladen Đorđe Sekulović :).

I finally found a valid connection path for Charles Boyer, who is connected as of this morning. Still got a lot of work to do to fill the profiles in the chain a bit more.

That's excellent news, Isabelle!
BTW - TY on Karl. I corrected it. One day when I understand more about the foreign characters, I may try to adopt the more interesting and likely more "accurate" version, but for now I'll settle for spelling the anglicized version correctly. Yet again, one of my limitations...

I have at least three individuals that I have identified as Notables.  All have Wikipedia pages.  William Tyler Page the author of the American Creed should be listed as a notable.  The others are two of the three Witnesses to the Golden Plates found by LDS Founder, Joseph Smith.

I would like to join the project so I can add these profiles and others that I come across while working on WikiTree.

Best regards,

I have been working at creating a sticker for Outstanding Women, but while many agree it should be separate, some keep pointing to your project. Reading your introduction, I tend to agree. Could this be a subgroup of notables, such as in Woman's History? Thus they might be recognized as notables in one or two or more different ways, such as Hedy Lamarr who was an Actress and an electrical engineer, inventing the precursor to WiFi. And Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist, who was awarded two Nobel Prizes. They could be under other categories, but I truly believe that they should be recognized for their efforts to step out of the standardized role of women with Outstanding results to their country or the world. I would propose a sub-project of Outstanding Women to acknowledge the extra work they had to do to get around the bias against their sex in the workplace.

I added Shirley Muldoney as Roque-79 for variety. She is a race car driver and has won many awards in a sometimes all-male field. Yes, she has a profile in Wikipedia. If you would like to see it in Wikitree, I will add you to the trusted list since she is very much alive.

Here are their WikiTree profiles:

Heddy Lamarr https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kiesler-4

Marie Curie https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Skłodowska-2

and many more here and subgroups on this page

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Women%27s_History

Yees, but this doesn't answer my question. Should Oustanding Women be a subgroup of Notables or even Historical Women or Not? Sorry I like specific answers. And yes, I know their profiles.

Sorry, i do not know the answer. I just wanted to help the others know that the profiles already exist, and they can see how they are coded, so they are better able to answer your question.

Since you raised this issue, I have categorized about 100 profiles into the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:National_Women%27s_Hall_of_Fame_%28United_States%29

category, so that at least all the these female profiles are grouped together.

I got this list of notorious female mathematicians from Chris Little. They should be added, if not here, and recognized for their work.

Good for you for adding them. I hadn't noticed that category. Shall I help you add some of the others? Why not make a list of them to add to your category and post it here. Then in two weeks of so, you can have some help in adding them.

but those I've listed certainly aren't limited to the USA. Marie Curie was Polish by Birth and French by marriage and in her work.
Pretty sure some of them are there already. I can recall working on Ada Lovelace in the past, or at least looking it over. But definitely a good list to work from.
Thanks. Now to get the sticker made. Even if is something simple without an icon that just says something like Ada Lovelace was an OUTSTANDING WOMAN because she was the first programmer.

My work this month was connecting Dr Albert Schweitzer and his cousin Jean-Paul Sartre to the global tree. Both were attributed the Nobel Prize - Peace for Schweitzer, and Literature for Sartre, which he declined.

Also found that there were existing profiles for the parents of actor François Périer, so I added him.

by Isabelle Martin G2G6 Pilot (567k points)

Painter Camille Pissarro is expected to show as connected after the next update.

Magnifique!
Aww, thank you, Jessica!

I may have managed to finally connect Georges Pompidou (President of France 1969-1974) but this connection is so complicated I don't even know what I've been doing. Will check after the next system update to see if it worked.

EDIT - showing as connected as of this morning, January 10.

I started a profile for dancer and choreographer Loie Fuller, who eventually made most of her career in France. She is connected.

I have been adding Notables specifically inventors... well over 50 by now.

Can we add a sub category for Swedish Notables?
by Andrea Taylor G2G1 (1.4k points)
I had to look into this one, as I was pretty sure this already existed. I was wrong, so it has now been created. I added Ingrid Bergman to the Swedish Notables list.

There might need to be some tweaking as the only ones I could identify (under category Sweden) that would be a part of this were the Monarchy. However, we might need to add other categories, such as Politicians, Entertainers, Inventors, Explorers, etc. if such exist. I'll have to take another look and see if I can interpret which ones make sense to add.

If we identify one of these, we should go to that category, edit, and Add [[Category:Swedish Notables]] to it and save.
Thank you. I have added this category to the profiles I have created that are considered to be notable Swedish persons (mostly inventors).

I joined up and created Increase Allen Lapham-685 in Dec. but haven't gotten a badge for him.  Also I asked if Charles Willard Lapham-636 would be considered Notable (he's not in Wikipedia but his house is) and never got an answer.  Did I do something wrong with them?  This was my first month of trying to join projects.

Thanks.
by Jennifer Lapham G2G6 Mach 1 (17.6k points)
Hi Jennifer,

He's an interesting situation, as there is little information to show his Notability other than the existence of a house. The house itself is Notable as it relates to it's unique architecture and historic relevance, but I couldn't find anywhere (other than vague references) as to what part he played in its design, architecture, or construction. I suspect if a Wikipedia article was created on him, laying out his life story, documenting his background with the Chicago Fire, showing his knowledge of architecture and his laying out of his design plans, and his work in constructing the home, then it would be clearer as to whether or not he would be considered Notable. However, with only some vague references to him, it's difficult to say at this time.

I've been looking at the list of suggestion codes 568/569 (Wikidata unconnected profiles) for the English county of Sussex and have managed to connect 4 of them.
Frank Tees   who took part in the Dambusters raids during WW2
Edward Carpenter poet and writer
Lord Thomas Robert Dewar whisky distiller
Lord Leonard James Callaghan British Prime Minister during the 1960's.

Like most of the profiles included within these suggestion codes, all four of my connections were born elsewhere and retired to the south coast of England for their retirement years.

Sorry for any delays - it was my 30th Anniversary this month, so I was trying to do many things all at once, and it ended up making me late to most of them. I hope I've caught up, but if I've missed someone, please let me know.

For my connections, I've been going back to Academy Award Winners and making sure I didn't miss any as well as taking another shot at connecting them again. I found a whole series of them that were given Honorary Academy Awards during one year, most for the "Spawn of the North" movie. This bunch was:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mesenkop-1

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Marsh-7635

And the last I'm working on now is a Juvenile Academy Award to Deanna Durbin:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Durbin-1587

All that and I guess I still found time to add additional family members to my own tree and celebrate.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Deanna Durbin should be connected to the global tree once the links update tonight. This was the easiest portion of this group, as they all had existing Wikipedia articles and were well-known enough that someone had done some of the research for me.

However, there were additional names that I knew were going to require working from scratch, and now comes the fun part of finding bits and pieces of these persons:

Devereaux Jennings (not the skiier, but he WAS the brother of Gordon Jennings - easy win there!)

Irmin Roberts (Paramount second-cameraman)

Art Smith

Harry D. Mills

Walter Oberst

Allen Davey (Cinematographer)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jennings-8344

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Roberts-29924

Devereux Jennings and Irmin Roberts created and connected to the global tree.

Art Smith is going to be a challenge. His IMDB doesn't show much:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1071079/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_6

I did find a potential candidate on the 1940 Census - living in LA, born circa 1903 in Iowa, married an Ohio girl named Eleanor, 2 sons Robert and Richard and a daughter Patricia. Can't fully read his job position, but it looks a lot like R***s Engineer Pictures

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9MT-J3KM?i=13&cc=2000219

Looks even more likely - in 1930 he was also in Motion Pictures:

Looks like this is the one - Arthur Bell Smith - :)
Harry D Mills:

Walter Oberst

At least I now have starting information for the last 4...

Started a profile for recently deceased composer Michel Legrand, who won 3 Oscars. Don't expect to see him connected soon, though.

I'm sure you'll give it your best, Isabelle! My solution would be to find a line he's married into that might be easier to research, but I'll admit that I know little about him so that may not be a reasonable approach.
He was married three times, the first two wives cannot be researched as they were/are not notable and born too recently to be researched conveniently - and there is a good chance they are still alive. The third one is said to be a descendant of the Gagarin princely family (not related to Yuri) but since she is living I do not wish to pursue that. His father was married several times - so far I've found the parents of wife #1 - Michel Legrand's mother, and there is another one who was born in the town where I live so it might be possible to check out her birth act, but this is it.

I'd like to join this project, and solidify my TENUOUS ties to Thomas Vaughan, who served in the Revolutionary War, and to the Viking chieftain, Thorgil Sprakling, as well as any other notables I might find.

I'm fairly certain I'm related to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Taylor Swift, William and Viggo Mortensen, and Jessica Vaughan ( https://cis.org/Vaughan), but I haven't even found tenous traces to them yet.

by Living Vaughan G2G6 Mach 2 (27.5k points)
Stevie Ray Vaughn is on Wikitree, although his Vaughn line hasn't been traced back very far. Vaughn is a fairly popular Welsh surname though, and all Vaughns may not be directly related.
