Question

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2019?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

1) You have been on WikiTree for 30 days
2) You have signed the Honor Code
3) You have made 100 or more contributions

Please note when requesting redirects to variants: There can only be three spellings of the surname per Study, and one of them must be the name itself (such as Haywood, Heywood, and Haywud for the Haywood Name Study).  This limit is posed due to limitations of the creation form plus lack of manpower.

Depending on your answer to my comment, I will answer the question. There is a Harrington Name Study, but the only thing in it is a sub-category, Cork, Harrington Name Study, which is for Harrington’s from County Cork, Ireland. I’d like to have a ONS for English Harrington’s. Should I just use the existing Harrington ONS instead of creating a sub-category  ONS called English Harrington Name Study?  I’m leaning toward using the existing study. No point in having a category that is too specific. Also, is there  anyone currently hosting the Harrington ONS? If not, I’ll do it. Thanks.

Yes, I knew Witt and White are related. I'll check out the White study and see whether it's covering Witt/Whitt/Whyt also.

What do you think? Would there be an advantage to running a separate ONS for Witt/Whitt/Whyt. In the US, most Witt/Whitt people descend from the 4 sons of the Virginia immigrant John Witt/Whitt (about 1670). It seems the "e" was added near the end of the 17th century as Scottish names were Anglicized, so maybe that's why the 'e' is not in our line.

Hi Ros,

I wish to conduct a One Name Study for Serjantson. Some variants include Sergeantson and Sarjantson. There are other variants for the name in Lincolnshire, but this is primarily the spelling for the area.  I saw that you could only have three variations of the spelling, but further variants where deviations occur in the records can simply be noted in the profiles in the biographies.

Having started at the wrong end for the Dawe Name project (categories now exist for Dawe Name project and Dawe DNA project), I thought it was time I followed the instructions and let you know before I make any (more) mistakes!

Variant surname Daw.

I want to be able to direct attention of Dawe and Daw researchers to a one name study space page that makes it clear they are synonymous and that there is a DNA project over on FTDNA and group together relevant sub categories.

I would also like to be able to draw particular attention to Devon / Cornwall Dawe / Daw families  here on WikiTree without being exclusive about that as the Dawe DNA project is worldwide.

For England/Devon do I need England.Dawe...  | Dawe as well as Devon.Daw. ... | Dawe or just the Devon level?? Or do you set that up?

If so, then here is how you would do it:
On the person-profile, you would put [[Category:Devon, Dawe Name Study]]

I have done this for Isaac Dawe-67 and nested it within England and then United Kingdom.  If you want another county - say, Gloucestershire - then just note what is in each edit box and copy it.  (You shouldn't have any trouble, now that I have done England and United Kingdom.)

If you create any future categories, please don't use the / (as in Dawe/Daw) as this chokes the computer (!)

You don't.  For the sticker to be working (ie with green text) then a Leader has to create a redirect.  No need to bother another Leader - it is all in hand.  You just have to be patient!

I would like to also start a name study for the surname Barrett. My great grandmother was Evalina Nora Barrett who married William Green. She died early leaving her daughter Lottie an orphan. Evalina’s parents Norman Barrett and Charlott Barrett adopted their granddaughter Lottie.
