Question

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2019?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

Depending on your answer to my comment, I will answer the question. There is a Harrington Name Study, but the only thing in it is a sub-category, Cork, Harrington Name Study, which is for Harrington’s from County Cork, Ireland. I’d like to have a ONS for English Harrington’s. Should I just use the existing Harrington ONS instead of creating a sub-category  ONS called English Harrington Name Study?  I’m leaning toward using the existing study. No point in having a category that is too specific. Also, is there  anyone currently hosting the Harrington ONS? If not, I’ll do it. Thanks.

If you look at the ONS Project page, you will see that each person is allowed a maximum of 7 ONSs.  You currently have 11:
Bise, Buchanan, Campbell, Dunavan, Grover, Kelsey, Murphy, Palmer, Price, Riddle, and Wheeler.

So I am afraid that I cannot create the Ford Name Study for you.  Please take a look at the Studies you already have and decide which ones to keep.

I would like to create a ONS for Harrod. My particular interest is in that of Moses Harrod / Harwood from Orange County, VA. Moses settled into Franklin Co. Kentucky with another family of Harrods (James of Harrodsburg fame) and William (who traveled with Lewis and Clark), who are not related to my branch.I have even confirmed the difference of the families by my own DNA testing.

Furthermore - I suspect that Harrod may not even be the original Surname, and I'm hoping some new testing from cousins may come along to help flesh this research out.

All that being said - I am not confident of the best way to proceed given the goals, but I believe this is a valuable research group given how prominent both families are within the state of Kentucky.

I eagerly await your input.

It sounds as though you want to study Moses, James, and William, which suggests a freespace project rather than an ONS - or do you want to look at Harrods everywhere and everywhen?  

I would be unable to create an ONS for you just yet, anyway - if you re-read the question at the top, it gives three requirements, two of which you have not yet met.  But I would be delighted to see you again later!

I would like to start a ( One Name Study) for my Maiden name DORGAN. It is not a popular name in Ireland and the states, which I think will make it easier to research. I could be wrong! Dorgan and Durgan are the variants i have noticed.:-)

Yes, a Trusted List request is fine.  Don't forget that the ONS Project page does say you can only have a maximum of seven ONSs.  Just how many is 'a few'?

Yes.  The Guild of One Name Studies says a maximum of 3.  When you think about it, it's a chance to give back to the community.  You're going to be studying a name so you can present information to the world.  Why would you want more than 7?

Being on the trusted list alerts me to any activity on the Name Study pages of surnames of interest to me. I can then offer my assistance to others. Most of the surnames are small and have little interest. Only a few take more work and involvement.

btw, the Beck study could be merged with the Peck study since I found the names were often interchangeable.

I think the ONS Project means *leading* no more than 7.

As for the Beck and Peck Name Studies, I think you would need to contact the PM of the Peck Name Study to discuss this.  I would prefer to keep them separate.  You may have found instances where they are used interchangeably, but I think that is probably where we would consider one to be a variant of the other.

Actually, it's probably best to send me a PM of all the ones you want to adopt/be on the TL for.  Only because that particular maintenance category is in the middle of a project, and not all Trusted List requests will get to me.

Thanks Ros. I added a Rattray sticker to a profile {{One Name Study|name=Rattray}} but the sticker comes out red. I clucked on it and a message appears that says "You've followed a link to a page or a category that doesn't exist yet. To start it, enter something in the text box below"

But if I scroll to the bottom of the profile and click on "Rattray Name Study" I find that profile on the Category Name Page.

Name Studies have the option to be worldwide; if you wish to restrict it to geographical areas (such as Mason County and Putnam County) you are welcome.  Just be aware that if somebody turns up who wants to research the name in another area - or even another country - you should be prepared to allow them to join the Name Study.
