Question

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2019?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

2) You have signed the Honor Code

Please note when requesting redirects to variants: There can only be three spellings of the surname per Study, and one of them must be the name itself (such as Haywood, Heywood, and Haywud for the Haywood Name Study).  This limit is posed due to limitations of the creation form plus lack of manpower.

Depending on your answer to my comment, I will answer the question. There is a Harrington Name Study, but the only thing in it is a sub-category, Cork, Harrington Name Study, which is for Harrington’s from County Cork, Ireland. I’d like to have a ONS for English Harrington’s. Should I just use the existing Harrington ONS instead of creating a sub-category  ONS called English Harrington Name Study?  I’m leaning toward using the existing study. No point in having a category that is too specific. Also, is there  anyone currently hosting the Harrington ONS? If not, I’ll do it. Thanks.

Hi, Ros!

I have bumbled headlong into this area and I get the feeling I should have knocked at the front door.

First, I am not sure I belong in this capacity (trying to get an ONS running) but here I am! Can you help me? I have tried to read the information but don't really find a step-by-step outline for a neophyte like me. I managed to put some information on the site I think I set up but now have been hit with a question.....someone actually wants to join the site. For the life of me, I do not know how to include this brave soul.

You should know I come from the generation before everyone walked around with access to a computer. In fact, the ones my husband used at first encompassed a large room and spit out reams of paper that had to be checked for errors. I've come a long way, but progress is slow <grin>

basically: you sign up to this thread here (the one you are on), and I set it up for you! Let me know which name you are interested in.

When someone wants to join you, it is up to you how you do it.  You put their name on the freespace page of your ONS, you keep a running tally on a spreadsheet on your computer, on a piece of paper - whatever.

It's not common in my neck of the woods either :) Leonidas Gilpin married my Aunt Narissa Lou Stewart, so I have many Gilpin cousins. But it's definitely not a common name.

Hi Ros,  I would like to work on the Jackson One Name Study.  I contacted you earlier about the unresponsive manager, Tom Jackson.  I see he is still listed as mgr tho I understood that he had not responded.  So please check on the status of this Jackson Name Study.  I'm not even sure the current page was set up properly.  It let me add text to the page and you asked me to not add any more at the time.

I am still working with Leaders on background stuff for the Jackson Name Study, which may well result in Tom being removed as a UPM (unresponsive profile manager).

As I said in my email of 4 August, "No, the Jackson Name Study has not been set up 'improperly', and the reason your edit took was that the Study has 'Open' privacy, just like you would be able to edit a person-profile which was 'Open'."  The page will still let you add text; the only reason I asked you not to was because I had not sorted out who was going to be manager.  Being on the Trusted List and being Profile Manager have more to do with approving merges.

I know you have been waiting, but I must ask you to please keep being patient while I sort this out.

I already set up a Ross ONS on Wikitree. I had some personal issues and wasn't able to work on it very much until recently. Then for awhile I thought I must have done something wrong and someone else had taken it over? I had just sort of given up on it, but now I see that the Ross ONS on Wikitree is back where it started. I'm happy to continue and have more time to work on it now, but if somebody else wants it that's fine too.
