DNA confusion

months ago my beautiful son agreed to do DNA testing. I understood he needed to answer an invitation to join WikiTree. I was under the impression that I would then be able to deal with the DNA results, which are being sent to me. Now it seems that might not be so.

He is not interested in being active, so what now?

Thanks for your answers Ros and Rick. Have invited him, now to wait, he never does anything in a rush!

At least I should have it sorted by the time the results come in.

New question if you don’t mind.

When I get his results, are you saying I have to send them to him to convert/upload them to another site to get them ready to add here?

What seemed like an easy ask is looking more like a chore for him.

On WikiTree we don't actually upload DNA "results". All that an individual has to do is to add their username/kit# or whatever identifying information is provided by the testing company, which varies by type of test and where it was taken. See the Recording Tests section of the DNA Features Help Page. Additionally, for autosomal/auDNA tests, if the results are downloaded from the testing site and uploaded to GEDmatch, the associated GEDmatch ID can also be included with the other test info.

Within 24 hours, that DNA test info will get propagated to the appropriate ancestors/cousins based on the specific type of test taken.

Which company did the testing and what was the name of the test?

Ftdna I did mtfull and my son Y-DNA67

Nice!

So for his test, after he has accepted the WikiTree terms and privacy policy to become at least Family Member here, your son can enter on his WiiTree profile that he did the FTDNA yDNA test, at the 67 marker level, his FTDNA kit#, and the Y-Chromosome haplogroup that he gets assigned to from the results.

For your test, you can enter on your profile that you did the FTDNA mtDNA (full) test, your FTDNA kit#, and the Mitochondrial haplogroup that you get assigned to from your results.

I'd suggest that you both also consider whether you're comfortable with downloading and uploading your particular DNA results to a 3rd party site. If so, I'd suggest checking out the now-gearing-up mitoYDNA site (and read their terms/privacy policy).

Thanks Rick, will have to wait until he comes over later in the year, to decide about 3rd party sites.

Hoping he will do the other as we have discussed using his DNA results for this site and it will only take a little more work for him. Usually can persuade him face-to-face, not so effective long distance!

Hi Marion,

Once your son accepts your invitation and becomes a Family Member here, he will need to enter his own DNA test info on his profile. He can also make you a Profile Manager or add you to the Trusted List.
