52 Photos Week 1: New

We're excited to announce that we've created the 52 Photos Challenge. It's a spin-off of the 52 Ancestors Challenge that Robynne Lozier brought to WikiTree in 2018.

To participate, follow the tag 52_photos. Every week we'll post a prompt in G2G like this one with a theme. There will be a link to a free-space profile for collecting the photos together (like this one). You should upload or add your photo to that page. See 52 Photos for help on this.

Themes will be broad and open-ended so that you can interpret it in a way that is meaningful to you.

If you use a social network (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) please share the photo there as well, using #52photos and #wikitree. This can be a great way to involve more family members. If you use a blog, include a link to your blog post in your answer below so we can all read it.

For fun, there will be three badges available:

  • 13 in 13 (posting 13 photos for 13 weeks consecutively)
  • 26 in 26 (posting 26 consecutively)
  • 52 in 52 (posting all 52 consecutively)

The first theme for 52 photos is: NEW.

Remember, to participate you'll need to add your photo to the free-space page linked below, i.e. add Space:52_Photos_Week_1_New on the photo edit page.  You can share them in this G2G post as well but they need to be on the free-space page to be counted. See 52 Photos for more information.

Both photos are on the space page - but you have to click the "View All" button at the to bottom of the photos, and then click the "next page" button to see them all, since the page only shows 10 pics at one time, and there are currently 22 pics on that page. I have found the url for your fathers pic and added it as a comment for people to click and see.

I follow SJ's instructions, but that still doesn't seem to work.
Once I got it to space page, I just clicked on the correct photo on that page, then copied it and pasted it into my answer on this page. And of all things, it worked.

Sign me up! I will post a photo soon, sounds like fun!

The only photo I have of my grandfather is this one on his headstone.

Profile: Charley Selman Sr.

Hi, I posted a photo yesterday on the Free Space page -- New Dresses -- and it shows there, but I haven't received a badge yet. Maybe I'm being impatient -- sorry if I am. Thanks!
I see that you do have your badges now!!!
Yes, thank you! And thank you, Eowyn, too!
I’m interested! I’ve been cleaning out stuff preparing to move, and have found tons of interesting vintage family photos. I’m not sure exactly who the people are, but have a pretty good idea what part of the family.
I just added my first photo to week one as instructed but I don’t see it coming up.... wonder what I did incorrectly? Added it to Rommel-46
I just added my first photo to week one as instructed but I don’t see it coming up.... wonder what I did incorrectly? Added it to Rommel-46

Thank you

Did you load it to the free space page for week-1? Then copy the photo from the free pace page and start an answer here and in the answer, paste the photo? If instead you put it in Rommel-46, you must add as one of the profiles Space:52_Photos_Week_1_New.

My great grandmother with her new car. I don't think my great uncle in the back is all that impressed!

Here's my tweet about it. :-)

by Susie MacLeod G2G6 Pilot (298k points)
He's so teeny tiny!
just love ❤️ this old car,
Your Great Grandmother was an amazing woman. Not many women owned a car in those days. Oh and the car, It is a brass car.  I think a touring car? It has the French lights, the brass lamps and spoke wheels. I would not be surprised if Pip jumps in here and would want to buy this masterpiece of a day gone bye, Thanks for sharing your Great grandmother and her beautiful and magnificent automobile even if your great uncle did ot appreciate it at the time :o)
Wow.  Just wow.

When you look at it, it is really set up like a tractor - I'm sure it was amazingly comfortable at the time, but nothing compared to today's cars.  The front axle is a straight axle across, no individual suspension, actually, if you look, you can see that the suspension is leaf springs, not unlike what you would find on a covered wagon.  A huge jump from wagons are the massive spongy tires that made the ride quite a bit smoother than the horse-drawn carriages of a decade earlier.  It would be something to step back in a time machine, to climb aboard that car and have a country spin.

The engine looks just massive so I'm sure it had some pickup (no one worried about fuel efficiency back then) as also seen by the MASSIVE fuel tank that is below the car, it looks like a long white oval water tank.
I love that you all can see so much in this car that I am absolutely clueless about. Thanks for sharing your expertise. It brings it to life even more and I can feel my bones rattling as they went through the potholes on the first road!
Wow!  What a woman.  Thanks for sharing.
I really like this photo too. Am I imagining that her smile looks like yours, Susie?

Now featured as the Family History Photo of the Week on the home page.

Hi Chris, yes, almost certainly. My cousin, Britta, has the exact same smile:

Thanks, Chris. :-)

Well I may not be doing the ancestors challenge, but I think I can try the photos challenge. God knows I have TONS of photos.

Anyway, my first challenge is the one entitled New Daddy. This is my husband holding his newborn son just hours after his birth. As you can tell, we are still in the hospital.

It's on the space page - I still havent worked out how to copy and paste a simple photo!! I think we need a tutorial video on how to copy and paste photos from space page to G2G.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
edited by Robynne Lozier
Yay! I'm glad you are participating Robynne!

Voila :-)

Thank you SJ!!

And I think the word you are looking for is VOILA. (Vwa-la)

A Viola is a musical instrument - a smaller version of the Violin I believe.
Viola is a popular 19th century ladies name! ;-)

On the space page (or anywhere else the photo appears on the net) right click and copy photo URL.

Then when typing in G2G, click the photo button, 5th from right (looks like a sun and mountains in a box) and paste the URL.  Voila ;-)
Thank you SJ - Finally some clear simple instructions!!
Look at the proud daddy! The two of them are adorable.  Congrats on the baby(whenever the baby was born). I can tell that you are still in the hospital. A hospital is the only place that has those God-Awful chairs trying to  pass them off as comfortable. But proud and happy daddy does not care. Daddy Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound Thanks for sharing an adorable picture with us.
LOL

Thanks Jerry.

Let me tell you, the baby aint no baby any more. He is now a teenager and is TALLER than me, and is almost as tall as his dad!!
What an adorable picture. Thanks for sharing, Robynne!
This photo is so sweet.  Thanks for sharing it.

New Marriage

My grandfather, Lawrence Glen Western, and his 4th of 8 known wives (yes, grandpa was a player), Gertrude Louise (Lick) Western on their wedding day in 1951.

52_Photos_Week_1_New-2.jpg

by Deb Durham G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)
Beautiful couple!
Wow! He beats Henry VIII!!!
What a delightful couple the both look so very happy
Deb, they look so very happy! But since she's the 4th of at least eight it must have changed. But he must have been quite a guy.
I never knew him. My maternal grandmother was his first wife and my mother was his first child. He eventually fathered six daughters and abandoned them all. I recently made contact with three of the daughters (my long lost aunts) and a bunch of cousins. Still trying to establish contact with the last two daughters. Unfortunately, my mother passed away in January last year a few months before I found her sisters through Ancestry DNA. She knew she had two sisters and had searched for years. She knew nothing of the existence of the other three.

Many fond memories visiting the grandparents in northern California - it was a joy when a cousin shared this to FB - it was a first for me.

Love this pic.  You were so young!  I visited my grandparents in California when I was a kid too SJ.  Some of my best memories are those.

I propose as my NEW a new car for my maternal grandparents showing my Grandmother Merle Eastman and her children: Aunt Marie Louise Eastman, Uncle Lynn Rowley Eastman, and, my mother, Arlene Edith Eastman. And I didn't know they even owned a car!

Can anyone tell me anything about the car?

500px-52_Photos_Week_1_New-3.jpg
(I originally had a question about how to upload a photo which Robynne answered so nicely below..)

by Judy Bramlage G2G6 Pilot (209k points)
edited by Judy Bramlage
Instructions are on one of the comments on my post to get it onto G2G

But it also has to be uploaded to the 52-photos space page linked above.
I believe it's a Ford Model T "Centredoor" sedan which were built between 1915 and 1923. It has the distinctive "egg-shaped" rear window. The tyres would originally have been white, but I doubt that would have lasted long.

What does everyone else think?
What a fantastic car, I can certainly se your family love the car

Thank You for sharing this wonderful photo
Susie, It very well can be a Model T. That style rear window is called an opera window. It also has wooden rims for the white tires. The original cost of one of these cars was $850 back when they were new.
By the age of the children, the photo was taken about 1930. So my guess is a used car or a borrowed one from a relative. Hmm. Does it still count as a First?

I chose a picture of my Great Grandparents James and Viola Sharp (aka Jim and Ola) with their oldest child, Lester Sharp, soon after he was born October 22, 1901.

by Emily Holmberg G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
edited by Susie MacLeod
There you go, Emily :-) If you click on the photo when it's in the free space to bring it up on its own, then copy the URL, you can paste it in the link on here that looked like mountains with a sun in the corner. That's the photo button. I resized it a bit to make it smaller. Hope that's okay but feel free to play around with it. It's a fantastic photo. Are you storing it in an acid-free environment?
Thanks Susie! It is a great picture.

As far as I know, I was doing what you described - must have been missing something.

I have a copy my mother made - I believe she and my aunt have the original at their house. Unfortunately probably not in acid-free environment.
What a gorgeous photo I really a treasure

My grandparents on their wedding day. My grandfather immigrated to the US when he was 13, my grandmother was born in the US. Both families were Polish.

My grandmother was an accomplished seamstress, she actually made her own wedding gown! My grandfather was a handsome fellow whose platinum blond hair gave him a nickname he hated, "Whitey."

by Karen Fuller G2G6 Mach 3 (32.1k points)
Hi Karen, what a great photo and I love the dress! Do you know the tennis player, Boris Becker? Your grandfather bears a striking resemblance to him!

Susie :-)
Haha, Susie! I never thought of a resemblance between Boris and my grandfather. Maybe because Boris was built like a powerful machine and my grandfather was about 5'5". Funny, though, my very first tennis racket was my grandfather's. So maybe ....
What a wonderful photo of the wedding couple they look adorable
What a gorgeous photo -- the couple and the dress and the flowers. Thank you for sharing it.

My husbands father William Franklin Halpin 1928 - 2008 was the first paid/career firefighter for the York City Fire and Rescue Department in the Halpin Family. All four of his son's followed in his footsteps. The local York Sunday Newspaper used this photo for a Father's Day edition one year in early 2000 or 2001

by Louann Halpin G2G6 Mach 7 (70.8k points)
Thank you to your whole family for their service. This is an a very moving and powerful picture. Thanks for sharing it!

How wonderful! I had many relatives who were NYC firemen. One ggg grandfather Thomas Hodgett Kennedy was for a number of years foreman of Peterson Engine Company, one of the most celebrated fire companies of old New York. He died in 1871.

Thank you https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/user/MacLeod-1797

We lost two firefighters this year in the line of duty. First deaths in over 50 years. It was so totally devastating but when disaster strikes the goodness of people comes out. Our whole city received so much love from around the world.

Karen when you do their profiles do you use the Category for Firefighters on their profiles?
Great photo!  Love it.
Thank you for this photo. What a service the whole family gave.

My cousin's husband was a firefighter and their onlyson became one as well.

I just “newly” discovered this picture of Grandma June (Ellingsen) Frank in my Aunt Linda’s old photo album. This is one of 2 of her dressed up as a hippie but the other one I’m saving for the Scan-a-Thon.

by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
Does this fall under "new look?" I love it!
I like your version better. I was still in disbelief that I found this when I chose that especially since I know I have gone through that album before.

The woman next to her was one of her friends who owned a bar and it was there that this was taken. The Mona Lisa on the shirt got me to because when I opened our old trunk, that’s where we are keeping photos now, the first thing I pulled out was my Grandpa Joe’s Mona Lisa picture.
Wonderful photo

My sister Nancy Kenner had my brother build her house on her 13 acre land because of the house that I am living on her land got to small for when she wanted to entertain when the weather was bad, cold or wet she couldn't then when she moved into to it in 2015 she worked on her old house fixing it up so I could move up here and live in it beside her. This my sister profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barnett-3520 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kenner-358
