Opinion on category merge [closed]

Two categories exist:
1) New Zealand, World War II
2) New Zealand military personnel of World War II

The question is "Who is opposed to this merge?"

I'd rename the second one to the first one since there isn't content to carry over.
Hi Natalie

That is indeed the plan.

Sounds like a sensible suggestion for a merge.

Isn't it better to merge the category New Zealand military personnel of World War II into the category New Zealand, Army, World War II ?

New Zealand, World War II could refer to anything, other forces, life in New Zealand during WWII, etc etc and isn't very precise.

No, sorry. The New Zealand personnel category appears to be a hybrid category with profiles belonging to the World War II categories for our Air Force, Army and Navy.

I'm trying to build a structure, however I'm not sure I can get it to be precise in any form, given that I arrived in the game years after the establishment of a few things...

The New Zealand Personnel of World War 2 category is surplus to requirements and the profiles in there should be assigned to the 8 categories that are in the Category New Zealand, World War 2.

Until the profiles are looked at we can't know what branch of the Military they were in so merging the category into the New Zealand, Army, World War 2 category would be counter productive.

Sorry it is probably my ignorance about categories and how they operate, but if the personnel category is surplus to requirements, and the New Zealand, World War II category should not have individual profiles, isn't it better to sort out which branch of the military they should be in first, and then do what ever needs to be done to get rid of the military personnel category?

Or is the fact that most of the profiles in the military personnel category have a green privacy level going to be a problem?

I have cleared out the open profiles from the New Zealand Personnel of World War 2 Category. Most were Army but a few for the Air Force and one for the Navy. Some may need further investigation to get into the lowest possible categories.

The rest of the profiles will have to be adjusted by Editbot to get to the Target category of New Zealand, World War 2.

The privacy locks will be an issue.
I've noticed that, many thanks Darren!

And New Zealand, World War 2 is now cleared of Open profiles with all profiles now associated with their respective Armed Forces branches.

The New Zealand, Army, World War 2 category could possibly be further categorized down but I may look at them at a later stage.

The merge has now been proposed (accompanied by a note explaining why). Beginning to sort though the New Zealand Army, World War II category directing units to their appropriate units (located under the New Zealand Defence Force category)

Thank you for your input

The Green privacy profiles with this category are mine, they are associated with specific projects. It is an old category & not needed, I'll remove it from the profiles.

There is a problem being too specific about which service men were actually serving in, there was some fluidity between services in WW 2, particularly where technicians were needed. Some in the army were recruited for the airforce & ended up serving in the navy.

ps - I see this was brought up in March 2017 https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/368259/anzacs-wwll-new-zealand-military-personnel
