Ascension Island - which country?

I have just discovered an ancestor who was born in Ascension (presumably the Island LOL) in 1873.  This is a tiny volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, near Brazil.  What do I put in the birth location field?

It's a United Kingdom Territory.

So do I put "Ascension Island, United Kingdom"?
I don't think so, Ros. It isn't really considered to be a part of the UK. I think I'd use Ascension Island, British Overseas Territories or just Ascension Island.

Look at [[:Category:Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha]].   Ascension Island is part of the this British Overseas Territory according to the United Kingdom Project and Wikipedia.

I think that designation is from the 20th century.  Britain claimed the island early in the 1800’s but it was essentially just a military outpost for a century or more.
It doesn't matter if it is "just a military outpost". It belongs to the "British Overseas Territory", It is considered "Territory under the United Kingdom".
